So after 30 years I switched my home/auto from USAA to Progressive three months ago. Yesterday my rate went up 30%. No tickets or claims. I have heard companies do this after a year or two but three months? Has this happened to anyone else?

Do you have a six month policy? I could see them sending out a renewal notice indicating an increase.

Adjusting rates midterm is not something carriers are allowed to do to the best of my knowledge.

Hell, that's a good question. I just assumed it was a year….my fault. Guess I'll call them

Back in the day (mid 1990's) I had loyalty to my home/auto carrier State Farm.

Then Geico started advertising and more insurance companies started advertising and I realized there's no reason I shouldn't look for the best deal.

I switched our auto to Geico and got a terse letter from my State Farm agent for leaving the fold. Before that the assistant for my agent said over the phone "oh you're going to that lizard company, huh?" her words.

In the letter my agent made it sound like I was making a huge mistake and how dare I leave State Farm. He said he would forgive me and allow me back into the club if I wanted to come back. I was completely taken aback by the letter and it changed my approach to insurance.

I guess he was used to lifelong customers. I only have loyalty to a few things and my insurance company isn't one of them.

Every few years I have an independent agent review my home/auto to make sure I'm getting the best deal.

Over the years, I've used State Farm, Geico, Allstate, Progressive and SageSure Auto. and I'm probably forgetting one.

Long story to say I would encourage you to do the same.

If this went down as you say, something changed - they thought there is another driver in the household and mailed you a letter, didnt't hear from you, so added the driver

Or, they had applied some discount that needed a document to substantiate etc and they took the discount off

If you call them and ask what happened they can tell you what they need to revert it back. It shouldn't be a big deal if the above is what happened

None of those happened. I do have a call into them

like kingj3 said, it won't go up after 3 months unless something changed. Did they ask for your proof of prior insurance with USAA and you didn't provide it? Typically, it's something like that.

definitely call their 800 and get a person. on car insurance they accidentally had my two daughters on our policy switched as far as DL numbers. so they couldn't get an accident report and sent an adjustment to the bill. We got it corrected with them and the adjustment was removed.

I switched from Geico (who raised our rate 42%) to progressive, who raised our rate 25% after 6 months. Insanity

Exactly why I'm not switching as a usaa lifer either. And I'll only buy Michelin tires and Titleist golf balls.

I'll go yell at a cloud now.

If your insurance carrier has a billion dollar tv ad budget, it's a good indicator they are overcharging you.
