At minimum use unique passwords on everything.
Next step is to use any form of 2FA.
Next step would be to use one of the more secure forms of 2FA (app, etc..) as opposed to text/sms.
You're still vulnerable, but you've made it so that you aren't an easy target so you'll likely be fine.
As for how it will be handled going forward, I imagine in the next 2-3 years we'll have a widespread biometric password solution. The current solutions of always resetting passwords, needing a password manager, etc... are all ripe for "disruption".
