Fixing a credit score mistake

So, I'm looking at my free credit report from the Capital One app, and it reports a late payment/bad debt at the same time we closed my dad's credit account after he passed away. I don't know if my parents had me on the account or not, but my dad and I have a similar name. I'm thinking that's what is affecting my credit.

Does anyone know how hard this is to fix? Or the best way to figure out if that's actually what the issue is? Credit in the app is showing as 720, but that's the only thing according to the app that is bad.

I would submit a dispute with the credit agencies that source the report - Equifax example

This. Something similar happened with my dad and I since we have similar names. Filed a dispute with the credit agency and a week or two later it was resolved.

You can sign create a free account with all three ratings agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) and see your report and dispute it on each one. If it it shows up as an authorized user account you can dispute it with each one saying your have no financial obligation for that account and they should remove it. That would be my first step of something similar happend to me.

If I remember correctly they remove it from your report while they verify it. if the bank insists on keeping it there then you have to take it up with them but usually most banks have no problem removing authorized users from the report.

You can get all reports for free and it's a good idea to have an account with each so you can freeze your credit. They all try to get you to subscribe to credit monitoring but you can do everything you need without paying.

Thanks for the help. TransUnion had me listed for a couple student loans that I paid off nearly a decade ago. For some reason still showing up as having a balance. Equifax website is a pain in the butt, and been having issues trying to create an account there. But my Experian seems good - credit score there is 812.

I've had to deal with stuff like this with my wife from time to time. She is a twin and they have the exact same initials. Also lived together at several different addresses. SSN's are like 4 digits apart.

So we've had a lot of mixed credit show up over the years.

I've had good luck with disputing through TransUnion and it typically will fall off all three CRA's in the months following resolution of a dispute. These have always been issues showing up on all three CRA's though. If just one is off from the other two I would dispute with that agency.

Luckily they assign SSN's randomly now, but if you ever have twins at least give them first and middle names with different starting letters!

Credit scores are such a ****ty creation. I have a client buying a house and has decided to get a mortgage for it at least until their current house sells. The house is $1.3m, the house being sold is worth $900k and paid off. They have several million in liquid assets yet somehow a Target card wasn't on autopay and they missed a couple of bills and thus payments over a balance of about $100. His current score is 620 when it's usually 820 and at exactly the wrong time.

He's already paid off target. I told him to create a profile at each agency and dispute the claim that it's unpaid and since it's paid off I doubt Target will fight it. Such a silly thing though.

Can confirm that Equifax, specifically, is a nightmare to deal with. I recently froze my credit with each agency. Was able to easily do this online with Transunion and Experian but Equifax required me to call in to do it and then it took 2 days phone calls to India to get it done.

Hate that company.

I had an error on my report that listed an account which was opened before I was born. Despite being a glaring impossibility, it still took me multiple disputes to get it corrected.
