Not sure B&I is the right forum for this but figured it's at least a good place to start.

I have about $2,700 of un-used FSA money for 2025 that I have to use by January 15th. I know I can roll-over $660 into next year (which I plan to do), but that still leaves me with about $2,100. Any suggestions or ideas on what I can do with that money?? Or ideas on how I can re-coupe as much as possible??

I don't have any medical issues or anything to spend that amount of money on myself in the next month. I do have one idea to re-coupe some money but wanted to get yalls take or ideas as well. Thanks in advance.

Let me grok that for you

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are great for covering health-related expenses tax-free, but many plans require you to use the funds by year-end or lose them. While basics like doctor visits and prescriptions are obvious, here are some creative and often overlooked ways to spend your remaining balance on eligible items. Always verify eligibility with your plan administrator or the IRS, as rules can varysome items may require a letter of medical necessity (LMN) from your doctor.

Upgrade your eyewear collection: Stock up on prescription sunglasses, blue-light blocking glasses, non-prescription reading glasses, or even stylish frames for everyday use. Contact lens supplies like cleaning solutions and cases also qualify. This is a fun way to refresh your look while protecting your eyes.

Invest in wearable health tech: Devices like smart rings (e.g., Oura Ring) or fitness trackers that monitor heart rate, sleep, blood oxygen, and activity can be eligible, especially with an LMN for weight management or rehab. They're perfect for motivating a healthier lifestyle without feeling like a medical purchase.

Pamper your skin with protective products: Grab high-SPF sunscreen, tinted lip balms with SPF, acne treatments (like light therapy devices or medicated cleansers), or eczema creams. These double as daily beauty essentials.

Boost reproductive and family planning: Purchase pregnancy tests, ovulation kits, prenatal vitamins, or even breast pumps and lactation supplies for new parents. It's a proactive way to prepare for life stages.

Enhance your sleep setup: FSA funds can cover CPAP machine accessories, snore guards, special pillows, or over-the-counter sleep aids. For deeper relaxation, consider a weighted heating pad or meditation apps if they qualify under mental health.

Explore alternative therapies: Try acupuncture sessions, chiropractic adjustments, or homeopathic remedies. Massage guns or at-home TENS units for pain relief can also qualify, turning self-care into a therapeutic experience.

Gear up for fitness and recovery: With an LMN, buy yoga mats, foam rollers, free weights, or even a Peloton bike through eligible platforms. Athletic braces, mouth guards, or posture correctors add a sporty twist to health spending.

Stock holiday stockings or gift health items: Fill them with fun, eligible goodies like SPF lip balms, foot creams, acne patches, or hand sanitizers. It's a creative way to share wellness without wasting funds.

Improve home air quality: Air purifiers or filters for allergies, or humidifiers for respiratory health, often qualify with an LMN. This upgrades your living space while addressing subtle health needs.

Get genetic insights: A kit like 23andMe for health and ancestry testing can reveal predispositions to conditions, making it a fascinating and forward-thinking use of funds.

Prepare for travel or emergencies: Build a first-aid kit with bandages, ointments, motion sickness aids, or even cover mileage for medical trips. Bug spray and travel neck pillows for comfort during journeys also count.

Address foot and body comfort: Orthotic inserts, foot creams for dry skin, back braces, or heating/cooling pads can feel like indulgent treats while supporting daily mobility.

Tackle niche health concerns: Items like lice treatments, food sensitivity tests, or even hot flash relievers for menopause provide targeted relief in unexpected categories.

Monitor vital signs at home: Blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters, or at-home testing kits (e.g., for COVID or flu) empower you to stay on top of health proactively.

Support mental and emotional well-being: Online therapy sessions, counseling, or apps for stress management can be covered, offering a modern, discreet way to invest in your mind.
Many retailers like the FSA Store or Amazon have dedicated sections for eligible products, making it easy to shop. If your plan allows a grace period or rollover (up to $610 for 2025), check that first to avoid rushing.

Is it an FSA that can be used for any medical expense or a limited purpose for vision/dental?

Look at what it covers versus what you want/need. Could you get lasik? Or another pricey elective procedure that's covered? Glasses?

Correct. Can be used on medical expenses.

I already got lasik like 10 years ago and my vision is still going strong!

I would absolutely do the following but not tell your wife about it. And then strategically leave the pregnancy tests somewhere she will find them. And when she finds them act really shocked and uncomfortable when she asks you about it. Liven up your Christmas!

Buy qualifying products on Amazon. Submit your receipt. Cancel order before they ship. Put the money in your pocket.

Buy a bidet for every bathroom in the house. I type this from my heated $800 throne that I paid for from my HSA. Assuming an FSA will work as well.

BTW, if anyone asks, I have hemorrhoids.

We have $100k in our HSA. I really need to look into what I can buy with that money.

It seems like power washing active hemorrhoids would be extremely painful though.

Don't buy anything other than mutual funds with it

Buy a new mattress with a Dr's script.

You can use your HSA and avoid sales tax of you give the script at checkout.
