I am trying to find the free TurboTax Premier Desktop download on the Fidelity website, but it appears only the online version is available this year. I found the download version last year, but you had to hunt for it. Can't find it this year, or it is not available.

I don't want Intuit to have my info with the online version, so if I can't find the download version, I may go buy it at Costco. I would rather have a downloaded version, then send it straight to the IRS.

Anyone feel safe giving Intuit your tax info?

Amazon sells licensed downloadable versions that are cheaper than Costco.

Just use this free IRS service.

Free file is not available for those with income above a certain level.

Where do you see that? The first paragraph of their user guide says it has no age, income, or residency restrictions.

I think you can pick up a CD ROM at Office Depot.

You joke, but when I bought my laptop maybe 10 years ago most didn't have CD drives anymore. I bought an external drive only to run TurboTax until they started to offer the downloadable version.

Westley Snipes says, just don't file.

Seriously though, kudos for those of you who do your own taxes. I've never balanced a checkbook in my life. If i did my own taxes, I'd be in jail with Wesley.

My former boss didn't pay taxes for 7 years. His salary was in between $250k and $300k and was flat broke and couldn't pay his taxes, so he didn't.

One of the reasons I left that company. Last one into the office, first one out the door. Incredible that he's still there too.

Wow. Damn, just a little savings on that salary and he could have retired a millionaire several times over.

Plus, you and I have to pick up the slack for POS like that.

Yes? I've never thought twice about it.

What are you worried about?

While I don't hold any doubt my info is all over the place already... The fewer institutions and computer systems that have my detailed information, especially the account numbers that tax forms require, the better.

I get it but a CPA is using software too. Unless you want to file everything by paper and mail it to the IRS then your info is online somewhere.

Reminds me of when China stole everyone's security clearance information along with all the other peoples information that goes into filling one of those out. So we get a free one year subscription to one of these ID safeguard services. I forget the brand

Guess who China broke into next as if it was a practical joke

This isn't Forum 16, but Intuit has positioned itself as a far left company and some people don't trust companies that take such positions.

There's a difference in using software that is local on your own machine and uploading all of your pertinent info to a completely online system.

I currently use HR Block with software that I download and install on my local laptop. If they wanted to send me an install CD I do have an external drive. When I e-file it goes directly to the IRS, not to (or thru) HR Block.

They will have your tax info whether you use online or desktop. The desktop version is still constantly talking to their servers and what not. Every time you open it up, it always wants to search for updates. Plus if you E-File, you're relying on them to take your tax info and transmit it. I think to avoid this altogether you need to self-prepare and paper file.

But to answer your main question...has the Fidelity TurboTax desktop premier ever been free? I use home and business and enjoy the discount they offer, but never noticed that premier was free. There is a link from Fidelity>TurboTax that shows premier desktop discounted to $79, but not free. Hope you find what you're looking for.

There is free for certain clients, but eligibility is dependent on mysterious criteria.

I used to paper file...
But post Covid and no one being around to physically do anything with paper files caused me all sorts of troubles. I regularly must file an extension every year. Several years back, when I filed my extension I mailed in a paper check. Fast forward to October that paper check had NEVER actually cleared and my extension had never been processed. Based on all final documents (that necessitated my extension) I was then due a small refund from the balance paid in April (that had never been processed).

It created all sorts of unholy hell. Everything was mailed certified, return receipt, and I had copies of all documents mailed with their corresponding certified labels... Thank goodness! I also quite thankfully got someone on the phone with a functioning brain. We were able to come up with an agreed upon amount that I owed, and I sent them a check that this time didn't get lost.

To this day, that check has NOT cleared or attempted to clear. I'm pretty sure that request for extension is now known only to God.

The switch is always hardest because you have to re enter your information and can't carry over from turbo tax... But the service is free and so much better. I think I'm about five years in since switching and really happy I made the change.

The 2024 TurboTax Premier Desktop download for Fidelity was $5.00, and online was free.

For 2025, it looks like Fidelity is only offering TurboTax Premier Online version for free, depending the size of your account.

I decided to pick up a discounted copy of the Premier Desktop download version.

Desktop
Allows multiple returns
"Forms mode" to view/edit actual IRS forms
What-if worksheets for tax planning
All forms included (no mid-process upgrades)
Good for: Investors, rental property owners, advanced filers who like more control and form transparency.

Online
More guided, streamlined interface
Auto-import of some W-2s/1099s (depending on bank/financial integrations)
TurboTax updates are automatic
Mobile friendly file from any device
Good for: People who prefer simplicity, access from anywhere, and guided questions.

Desktop
Your files stay on your computer.
You can import previous desktop tax files easily.
Online return data can be imported into Desktop, but you generally cannot move Desktop data back to Online.

Online
Stored in the TurboTax cloud accessible for up to a few years per Intuit's policy.

Desktop
Files are on your local machine less cloud risk but you must manage backups.

Online
Data encrypted and stored on Intuit's servers; secure but requires trust in cloud storage.

Desktop
Often cheaper overall for multiple returns.
More control, can use advanced features.
Some users prefer not having their data on Intuit servers.

Online
Easy to use and accessible anywhere.
Some report surprise fees if they need to upgrade mid-process.
It's per return, so it can add up if you file multiple returns.
