First in person Aggie women's game in a few years. Had great seats near the floor so it was easy to see (and hear) the action. I could not believe how poor the SEC officiating crew was in last nights Aggie/LSU game.
Equally atrocious both ways.
Are most of the SEC women's BB games worked by this level of referee? I guess I was expecting way better.
Did I just pick a bad game or is this the norm for officiating.

That game was better than the game against Georgia when 43 total fouls were called. Officiating in general has been bad this year.

I have only missed one home game this year. I think the officiating last night was the worst I have seen this year. As a biased fan, I regularly disagree with calls. However, last night I thought there were several jaw dropping mistakes by the refs.

So, my conclusion is they are usually better than last night.

Overall, I think officiating for the women's games is fairly bad. But, there were more horrifically bad calls than usual last night.

Being under virtual house arrest due to covid, I have been watching more sports, and women's college BB is one I have come to enjoy, except for the officiating. It appears to be universally bad.

I agree with the speculation that the talent pool for officials is presently very shallow.

I think the physicality of the last two games....dawgs and tigers, adds to the difficulty of the calls.
The charge vs block call is one of the toughest calls in sports. Ref has to be in a good position to make the right call, and some refs not in good enough shape to keep up with the pace of the game. Then whether a foot is in the circle under the basket or not determines the call in those situations.

I have seen a couple of very good wbb refs, but most are not that good.

I think Dee Kantner is a very good ref. She has reffed in the NBA and WNBA as well as college ball.
I like her as a ref and I like the way she interacts with players during the game.
Sometimes she makes some off the wall call that no one else in the gym sees. I think she makes the right call most of the time. She has done a lot of our bigger games at Reed over the years. Will not be surprised is she does our game with Tenn or S. Carolina. If so, she will be the head ref. Has a blonde pony tail, is thin and very energetic.

Charging calls seem to have changed a lot this year. Numerous times the defender is moving and a charge is called. Sometimes it is the offensive player using an elbow but often it is a clear case where blocking would have been called in the past. Anyone know of any rule changes?

Basketball is bear to call. However, like several of the previous posters, I wish there was a better definition of what is a block and what is a charge. It seems like any contact with a player moving towards the basket is a charge regardless of whether the defender is slightly moving or not. I also wish that some minimal contact could just result in a no call, especially if it is clear that the offensive player significantly "pulled up" and the contact was minimal. Too many of the players, even our ladies, collapse like they were hit by a moving truck at any offensive contact.

But it is a really hard sport to referee. If the ref is consistent, then that's as much as most can ask.

I would agree, Dee is a very good official. The Aggies would be lucky to have her officiate one or both of those games.
