Anybody know anything about this? Last we saw was him storming up the stairs and out of the arena after a couple close calls.

He forever shamed himself and his magnificently talented daughter. Electronic media has an infinite lifespan. I am fairly confident that he now regrets such an embarrassing loss of his composure. It happens.

The dude saw the game slipping away and couldn't handle the truth. Wanted to blame it on the refs. His daughter is one talented player. Bet he wishes he could have that few minutes back.

Father of Iowa State star ejected from Carver-Hawkeye Arena before Cy-Hawk Game, blames Iowa coaches, tweets at former players, player families, media

December 10, 2020

The Iowa women's basketball team won a thrilling game over cross-state rival Iowa State Wednesday night, but one notable fan wasn't around to see it.

Brian Joens, father of current Cyclone and former City High star Ashley Joens, was ejected from Carver-Hawkeye Arena before tipoff. The incident was first alluded to by Iowa men's basketball player Connor McCaffery, who tweeted, "Tonight was the first time I've ever seen a fan be ejected BEFORE tip-off." The replies to the tweet indicated the fan in question was Joens. KCJJ was able to confirm that with two fans in attendance.

Joens himself confirmed the incident, replying to McCaffery, "they threw me out because I sat in a seat away from all the fans by myself to social distance, and they said it wasn't my assigned seat so when I asked if they had checked with everyone she said I had to leave. 200 fans in a 15500 seat gym and I sat in the wrong seat."

Joens later tweeted, "First time I have ever been kicked out of a game for sitting in the wrong seat. 200 people in a 15,500 seat gym and I socially distanced and they kicked me out. Bluder and Jensen have some serious issues". The last sentence is a reference to Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder and associate head coach Jan Jensen. Joens later deleted the tweet.

Joens later replied to tweets from Frank Garzafather of Iowa men's star Luka Garza, and Des Moines Register reporter Chad Leistokow. In both cases he wrote about assigned seats, and why the mens' basketball team was allowed to attend the game. He then replied to a tweet by former Iowa women's basketball star Megan Gustafson, asking, "Why did Whitney leave?", an apparent reference to former Iowa player Whitney Jennings, who transferred to Butler in 2016. At the time, Jennings said she wanted to move closer to her home in Logansport, IN.

No criminal charges were filed following Joens' ejection, although witnesses told KCJJ UI Police had to follow Joens around the building before he finally left.

Iowa later won the game, 82-80.

Joens, who owns Joensey's restaurant on North Dodge Street, also made news recently after an October incident at the UI Quickcare clinic near his business.

According to police, a roofer at Quickcare called dispatchers on the afternoon of October 12th and said that a man was mad at him and took his ladder. Various witnesses told police they saw Joens take the ladder from the side of the building and bring it into his restaurant, then throw the ladder out the back. Joens told officers he didn't take the ladder, but was able to point the roofer to its location. Joens allegedly caused about $30 in damage to the ladder.

A non-jury trial is set for February 5th. If convicted, Joens could be sentenced to up to 30 days in jail.

IC restaurant owner faces criminal mischief charge after incident at neighboring business

October 15, 2020

An Iowa City restaurant owner faces a criminal mischief charge after a Monday incident at a neighboring business.

46-year-old Brian Joens, owner of Joensey's on North Dodge Street, was charged after a Monday incident at the University of Iowa Quickcare clinic near his restaurant.

The ICPD online activity log shows officers were called to UI Quickcare at 3:12pm for a report of vandalism. Four minutes later, a roofer called dispatchers to say a man was mad at him and took his ladder. One minute after that, officers were called to Joensey's for a harassment complaint.

Police say two witnesses saw Joens carry a ladder from the side of the building into his restaurant. The roofer who owned the ladder had been on a 30 minute break and came back to find it gone. A third witness said he saw Joens throw the ladder out the back door of his business. Joens claimed he didn't take the ladder, but was able to point the owner to its location. The owner noticed about $30 in damage that was not pre-existing.
Joens is charged with 5th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail. An initial court appearance is set for November 16th.

Did he leave or just go to the top of the stands? I thought he just stayed on the concourse and yelled from up high.

You can see him in the "surrender cobra" position up high in the stands at about the 15 second mark of this video of the game winner. He is in a red shirt.

The sudden departure suggested to me the bench warned him not to risk a technical for them by being obnoxious to the officials. There is a line and it's different with each ref. I think moving up top was smart. Especially since with a small crowd partisans are rather identifiable...and we know they were friends/family.

Their coach enables that behavior with his. Not a good look but passivity isn't, either.

The apple apparently fell really REALLY far from the tree on this one. I was amazed at how poised Ashley Joens was through some really bad experiences on the court and some plays that were questionable no-calls. She never once showed disappointment, anger, etc... Really a cool customer- she's a WINNER!

The multiple, documented accounts of his unstable (IMO) conduct explain much about his behavior at the Alamodome. He needs help.

When they 1st showed him mouthing about something, I gave him the benefit if the doubt as a dad anxious and pulling for his daughter.

I have a daughter, I know how I pull for her in competitions, so I just said se la vie.

But they kept showing him.

The dude is not a cool customer.

In fact, he's a hothead.

Daughter or no, he lost the benefit if the doubt and just became a ranting idiot.

Maybe her dad was the issue of her not getting picked up by a big named school?

The guy is an a$$ who has anger issues. He really needs his a$$ kicked. It will happen someday. I enjoyed watching him melt down and then lose the game. I would bet he never played anything in his life. He's a loser.

Well, I've never been thrown out of a gym. He has 30+ times. So he's achieved that. He's achieved embarrassing himself on national tv so badly that espn quit showing him to spare the family more embarrassment. So he's achieved that. Sounds like he's made a lot more sandwiches than me. So he's achieved that

They WERE NOT going to get a T. No college official would ever call a T on a crowd member unless they did something to actually interfere with the game (i.e. throw out tennis balls like the fans did to that Florida player who spit on a kid at a tennis court; Dewayne something or other in the early '90s, I think -- look it up). They'll tell stadium people to get rid of the guy, or the stadium folks will take it upon themselves to do it anyway. Some form of the latter probably occurred.

Yes, he definitely has anger and other personal issues and has no business being anywhere near an athletic contest or even out in public. If I were the AD, I'd send him a letter, hand delivered, saying, "stay away from ANY game," and then politely suggest to his daughter that she either go somewhere else to play or just start being a regular ISU student. In other words, de-recruit.

No college program needs people like that. I know it isn't her fault per se, but she is now old enough to tell her dad he is behaving like an ass and embarrassing her and her team.

Sports are going to end sooner rather than later unless we start making a calculated push toward sportsmanship.
