Looking at building ~2500sf fairly simple ranch house near San Antonio, budget $400k.

What would be a good estimate for design and prints on something that size/budget?

Likely you want a "designer" not an architect. If it's just something simple and don't use a full out architect you can get something for $2-3k. Cheaper if you can go off a plan they already have. True architect is going to cost significantly more.

$15-20kish sounds about right for that square footage....You could get something potentially cheaper if you found some existing plans from an architect and had them "tweak" certain things to your liking.

You might need some flexibility with the budget as well, depending on how nice your build out is but think it will be tough to hit your budget.

Better get a price on a structural engineer for the house and slab while you're at it. Architects can draw any size room you want, but they don't really care, (or know) what kind of structural beams it will take to support it. All this adds up on the cost. For the price range you're looking for, it's much more reasonable to use a preexisting package, than to go full custom. Also, your $/SF is too low. Prepare yourself to be shocked and surprised.
