2019 - My GF and I each own our own home, We each have a homestead exemption for our respective property

Nov 2020 - We mutually buy a house together however we are not engaged or married. Girlfriend files homestead exemption on our new house and removes it from her house. I dont do anything on my home (truly didn't realize i had to)

Get married in Q2 2022

June 2022 - Audit company says we have 2 homestead exemptions (main house, and my house) Wants me to get with HCAD and remove homestead from 2021 and 2022.

Lesson learned : Applying for homestead for new home does not automatically remove your current homestead exemptions.

Since we were not married at the time of buying this home, am I not eligible for homestead on my own home as long as one of us took it off our individual home to put towards our main home?

You have occupy the home on Jan 1 of that tax year to get the homestead.

What do you do with the original house? If you don't live there it's not a homestead.
I am always wrong

By definition, a married couple cannot have two homesteads. It's that simple.

Gotcha. Wasn't aware they had changed that.

The bigger factor from my reading of the situation is establishing another residence elsewhere. That point will be tough to argue.
