The sport of track and field is one of the oldest recorded athletic events in history, dating back to 776 B.C. Track spikes, a popular footwear choice for track athletes, came later, with the first pair being traced back to the 1850s. These shoes were created by driving nails through running shoes, made of cowhide, which gave athletes a stronger grip as they sprinted across tracks made of dirt and cinder. These days, track spikes are made of synthetic materials, but we have the cattle ranchers of the nineteenth century to thank for helping create what is now a $75 billion global market.
The NCAA outdoor track and field season officially kicked off on March 18, 2023. The Fightin' Texas Aggie track team started the season with a bang, bringing home 12 victories during the Island Relays Bahamas Invitational. These outstanding performances led to the men's team taking home the championship, while the women's team earned an impressive runner-up title.
