I will be retiring from the Navy in less than 18 months and intend to get my TX real estate license to supplement my retirement income and as I work to build my own real estate portfolio.

For our TexAgs realtors, does it matter where you take the courses as long as they are approved on the following website?

Approved Qualifying Real Estate Courses | TREC (texas.gov)

I am going to enroll and take the courses online while I am still stationed in California so I can jump into the job soon after moving back to TX.

Appreciate any feedback/recommendations.

As long as they are TREC approved, you are good to go! My recommendation is Aceable agent. Easy to use and teaches the info well! Good luck!

online classes are fine, but I do think there is some use to taking in-person courses for the networking.

Just depends on how much time you want to commit.

In person would be great, but I'm trying to complete the process before I retire from the Navy and move back to TX.

I took mine all online in during Christmas break in my final semester of grad school with Champions School of Real Estate. It was a solid course with a go at your own pace type setting. Not much instruction, but more reading and taking the quizzes, etc.

The best part I remember was getting a really thick course load book for the actual licensing exam and it covered all you needed to know. It was included and didn't cost extra.

If/when you pass the test, feel free to reach out to Jamie and see if you can park your license under him as the broker. He's a dead zip, class of 09. Hes got a few umbrellas besides Red Pear you can park yourself under.

I second this. I used Champions as well for my real estate license. I very much would encourage finding a Champions near you. Everything I needed for success was provided.

How much CE is needed when you have a license? I've thought about getting one just so I dont need someone to show me houses and can try and pop in when I see something interesting without having to get a 3rd party involved until the buying process.

270 hours must be completed before the expiration of your first license period before you can renew. Once you've completed this though, you don't need nearly as many hours. It's best to not drag your feet on it truthfully.

Is your first license period 1, 3 or 5 years or some other arbitrary number?

First license period is 2 years with renewal every 2 year intervals.

unless you plan on representing yourself (or someone else) on at least one deal a year, it's not worth the time and expense.

between HAR/TAR/NAR memberships and SupraKey access, you're looking at close to $1,100/year.

Good info and you're absolutely correct, that's not worth it.
