We've been in our house for over 7 years. Recently, we started getting a bunch of "new home owner" junk mail for someone that doesn't live here and isn't in the property records for my address. We've gotten a water test kit, a solicitation from a homestead exemption filer, and a mortgage life insurance protection solicitation for a mortgage of $297k. We've also gotten some "parcel holding" cards that aren't from the post office, so I'm fairly certain those are a scam.

Anyone have any ideas what's going on or if I need to do anything to protect myself?

ETA We're not and have never been behind on mortgage or tax payments. I've checked, and everything is paid up.

I hear the commercials for home title insurance. You should probably check the title to your house to make sure its clean.

How do I do that? I went to the county property records and the latest records are from when we bought the house. And there's not much before that. Looks like two previous owners and a mortgage refinancing, but that's it.

Also, this person could have been a previous resident as the home was a rental before we bought it. Could they have bought a different home and we're just getting the mail because of a mismatch in their public records?

The county would have record. I assume you are checking online. There may be a gap between filing and online depending on the county.

Two other options would be calling your title company or calling your lender if you have a mortgage.

I doubt you have a problem. It just seems like you are searching for some peace of mind which I totally understand.

Many counties have a service that will notify you if any documents are filed for your property or in your name.

Yeah. I've been thinking it's some kind of mass mailing list mistake, but there's a new scam every week and you just never know.

I might've figured it out. I searched their name in the property records and found some for a purchase in December. Looking at them, it looks like there is a loan for the amount that was on the mortgage life insurance solicitation. I'm going to assume they bought a house and someone who puts these mailing lists together just used a previous mailing address.

I will definitely look into the alerts anyway, though. I had no idea they did that. Thanks!
