1. get your family stabilized
Call your insurance agent and review your policy. You likely are covered for an extended hotel stay. Go buy all the essentials you need and keep the receipts. Take photos with your phone so you will always have access to them. Start a spreadsheet to track them all.
Let the kids' teachers know. That kind of loss can be hard for kids to deal with. Most teachers have experience with kids going through a loss and can help ease that transition.
2. consider next steps
Do you want to rebuild? Are you willing to wait 9-12 months for a new house? Would you rather move to a new place now? That decision will affect whether you need to find a house or an apartment to rent and for how long.
Thanks. Luckily my kids are 16 and 13 so they are somewhat independent. We sadly have kind of neglected them since the fire happened, but they were with friends or family while we were dealing with all the stuff at the house. Will definitely be having frequent check ins with them to make sure they're OK. My daughter is the 16-year-old and she's very stoic and a good way in a bad way but she has been very emotional about this.
Those are their schools have been super supportive so that helps
We hope to be able to stay and rebuild right where we were. We love the lot we were on in the neighborhood we are in. I really don't understand all the steps of how it works with insurance and rebuilding yet.
