Posting for the benefit of my son:

He recently graduated to adulthood and has decided to take up golf!

His biggest challenge is a lifetime of baseball (including starting 4 years in college). The kid has put a ton of work into his baseball swing and is currently trying to forget it all.

He recently graduated and got married, and says he doesn't have golf lessons in his budget. He is watching you tube videos and hitting the range 2x a week. I have no doubt that lessons would solve all of his problems.....but currently that isn't an option for him.

Any recommendations for online instructional videos or drills, specifically dealing with common baseball swing issues (releasing early, scooping the ball....). Or any other advice for a beginner?

Thanks in advance! He is coming home Thanksgiving and he can't wait to play a round with me (growing up, he has been in the cart with me several times and would swing at a ball here and there, but we have never played a complete round together)

I wouldn't ask him to forget his baseball swing so much. In my experience, students learn best from using their prior knowledge to guide them. Also, I would encourage him to stay balanced as said above, but to do it with speed. It's easier to learn how to swing fast and back off of that some, rather than swing easy and build up. Chest over the ball is something bad ball strikers don't do well. Instead they stand up too much.

I think Rick Shiels, Clay Ballard, and Chris Ryan do some decent online instructions.

I rebuilt my swing 6 yrs ago and used RotarySwing

Start from zero and do the drills. It really helped to change my thinking, focus on the proper core body setup positions, and then just letting the hands, arms and wrists be loose and be along for the ride. It was really hard to relearn and brake all the bad habits I had built over 25 years. There is a bunch of muscle memory.

I was very happy with where I got to….then took a long break and play rarely now. But the new swing and swing thoughts are still there when I tee it up.

Tell him to get his cheap ass father to buy him lessons.

Get cheap lessons from an assistant pro. Or get buddies and get a group lesson.

I'd say the biggest thing converting from baseball is tempo. Baseball swing is violent compared to a golf swing. And learning to shallow the club which can be hard if you've spent 20 years bringing your hands to the ball (which would make you over the top)

I didn't play in college, but I was a good HS baseball player and that significantly influenced my golf swing (some bad, a lot good...knowing how to generate speed from the ground up is huge).

Two lessons would go a LONG way. Get the second 30-45 days after the first. This will give him much more feedback about his swing than any youtube video trying to turn him into Collin Morikawa while staring at a screen.

I'm 38 and finally just started taking lessons. I have been a consistent mid-high single digit without any help, but lessons are already paying significant dividends. I know how to practice, what to work on, and what I should be feeling in MY swing.

I wish I would have done this 10 years ago. Two lessons would be a fantastic Christmas or birthday gift.

It's all about circles. And the middle of the circle shouldn't move much. Ywia!

I spent $99 on Clay Ballard's Top Speed Golf program. I just started it and I might change my mind when I'm done but so far I feel like it is worth the cost and will help me a ton. He can get someone to record him playing and see how his swing compares to what Clay is teaching.

The $99 price was when I clicked the link after one of his youtube videos. It gives you access for a year. If I went straight to his site it quoted me $149.

I have no doubt his goal is to beat me (eventually.)

I draw the line at paying money to help him achieve that goal!

Appreciate the input everyone!

I will likely gift the lessons for his birthday coming up. God knows I have supported him in every other venture!

Can't wait to share some rounds with him

Yea, I'd pony up a crap load of cash to get either daughter interested in golf. I've about given up. Enjoy the time with him - you'll really treasure it in 30 years or so with your grandchild joint y'all.

Buy him at least one 30 minute lessons. In my opinion if the coach has a skytrak with direct video feedback it is even better.

Best advice from an old ballplayer: Slow the swing down. The ball is not coming at you at 90+ MPH.

Update on the new golfer...

Ended up buying him some lessons for his birthday in September. He made friends with the pro at the local course and has benefitted greatly from the instructions and tips.

He has been hitting the range 2x a week and playing a round every other weekend. He is still playing with his father-in-law's old clubs and is looking forward to being in a position to be fitted and invest in a nice set.

He broke 100 for the first time this past weekend with a 98.

He is coming home (lives in Ohio) for Thanksgiving and I'm looking forward to our round at Cypresswood that Friday. He calls me after every round and literally goes through shot by shot. He has been bit by the golf bug.

I'm still not worried about being outplayed this year......but I might be in trouble next year. (I play 4 times a year....so the blow up holes get me sometimes)

He told me a story about one of his great shots from the weekend. Said it was a par 5 and he had 247 to center of the green, pin was back. So he said he hits a perfect shot and ended up rolling it to within 5 feet. I asked "did you use a fairway wood?" He answers...."No, my 4 iron"

Damn young kids/baseball players.....

But really, I am so glad we have something sport related to continue to connect on after living a life of baseball for 2 decades!

Know the feeling Dad my son thought golf was boring after playing contact sports growing up. A couple years ago I got him some starter clubs just to see if he liked it. Now this Christmas break from TAMU he's getting a full bag fitting.
We have played several times together and it's awesome having that much time together.
