Nothing but CC around here… which are
great if you're a member.

Where are you? Only way to do it if you're a serious golfer.

The Woodlands.
Don't have 6 figures to just throw out there.
More public access courses are needed.

Public golf kinda sucks in Houston. I got my company to cover a club Corp membership through the downtown club. The golf package was like $175 a month and gave you access to a couple woodlands course and kingwood.

You think the school board would go for that?

It's been a few years since I've played it but the Traditions course at Cypresswood used to be one of the best public courses in the greater Houston area. Shouldn't be too far from you.

Our booster club once struck a deal with a local CC. Not many people took advantage of it. I did. For my family membership I'm currently paying at least $100, if not $150 less per month.

Your job cannot afford your hobby ?

Sounds like you need a new hobby or new job.

Nobody should have to pay six figures to play golf. You have missed the whole point.

Are you complaining about fee to join Houston Oaks?

I joined kingwood (Clubcorp) for 1000 and 500 or so each month for a family or 6.

No, I am not complaining about the prices of Country Clubs.
What I am frustrated about is there are not enough public courses around these days.
I live in the middle of some of the best courses around but they are all private.
I just wish there was a great public course near by and not a 25-45 minute drive.

Sounds like you need to move or troll another board.

How many country clubs in Houston are 100k to join?

Why stop at golf? Demand every high end product be available in close proximity to you and also cheaper.

No offense but did you look into what education pays before going down that path?

I threw out a couple of good public options pretty near you. Add the new one on 99 near 59. It's public.

It would be great if there were one around the corner but a 30 minute drive, if even that doesn't sound bad to me.

They are the best courses BECAUSE they are private.

He presumably also picked where to live. Everything about this thread is ridiculous.

Problem is people want high end course at a low end price. Courses cannot survive with people playing (and paying) 1-2 rounds per month.

And I just realized my house is not on the beach. It's crap that I have to drive an hour just to see the beach. Someone should do something about that.

No problem...I'll spew more CO2 in the air and eventually you'll have a beachfront property.

I don't disagree with any of the sarcastic comments that you guys have stated here.

I do not have a demand or whatever this idea or belief system is being thrown out on these comments. I simply made a simple comment that there are many private courses near where I live, and I simply wish there were a few more public courses.

I also appreciate the comments that stated a number of these public courses.

I just enjoy playing the game of golf, although I am not very good after having played for nearly 30 years. I also appreciate the physical and mental exercise the game provides.

If I had the money to join a country club, I would do it for all of the reasons stated above. If you have the ability to join a country club, I think that is great. If you cannot afford a membership at a country club then you just look to play at a public course. I see the value in both formats of golf courses.

I have also come to appreciate the benefits of public golf courses and I simply wish there were more of them.

You guys are reading way too much into my comments. Golf is Golf and we all love it and I think we all want to introduce more people to it. That's why we bring our friends and family to play along.

Happy new year!

This isn't Scottsdale or Myrtle Beach but Harris/Montgomery County is hardly a public golf wasteland. Plenty of good options around, which I still take advantage of despite my CC membership.

Check out Golf Club of Houston Tournament course. It's pretty easy to get to and surprisingly affordable.

I have played HMR back in September after having not played it in 15+ years and it was in great shape. Really enjoyed that course.

They used to have a decent membership option. Think it was $40 for unlimited range balls and reduced green fees.

Could be a good option.

Anyone been to West Fork lately? I had to be on 105 today so I took a quick spin. Haven't been on the course in 20 years but that's not far from the OP in the Woodlands. GCOH Tournament course is $70 after 1PM weekdays and $80 after 2PM weekends. The Woodlands seems to have pretty good access to public golf.
