Like the title says I'm looking to pickup the game after my buddies have been hounding me. Haven't played since high school days.

Background: I'm 29 so lots of rounds ahead if I don't hate it. I do have two little kids I chase around so not sure if this can turn into an every weekend deal for awhile.

Where the advice is needed: I've talked to the PGA store & Golf Galaxy and they both said it's up to me on how to start out but if in my shoes would y'all just by a new box set all in one and rock out for a couple of months to see if my passion takes over? Or invest a little in a used set that should last for awhile.

If a used set, what does that price range look like? PGA store have used ones from 250-1200 for just irons.

Any advice on how far back my age range should be? Had one buddy tell me to try and stay 2015 or newer.

Assuming you are avg height, buy a used set of ping game improvement irons with standard shaft length and lie. Add a used 5 wood with standard shaft flex and a 56 degree wedge. Play with that for 3 months. Add lessons if you are catching the bug. Then think about driver. I found I could hit my 5 wood further and with more control than driver until I learned a proper golf swing.

If you really catch the bug, this set is something you can build on and use for at least a few years until your game is consistent enough for a fitting.

I wouldn't buy a box set. Get some used game improvement irons for a few hundred dollars. Like the guy above said, ping has some really good stuff in this department. Then honestly go to the rack at golf galaxy and mix and match a couple used wedges. Not getting a driver right away isn't a horrible idea either.

If I'm being honest, I'd be hounding my buddies back to help set me up with a set so I'm only out money for balls/tees/glove/tee time. If you like golf, hit all your buddies clubs and see if the money for used makes sense (playing every week) or if it's gonna be a twice per year hobby and spending more money doesn't make sense.

Find a 2nd swing store. Best option for decent clubs
