Well that is a helluva course, but a real beat down tee to green. Absolutely the hardest course I've ever played and likely toughest slope rating I ever will. The one up from the tips was 6750 yards and a 148 slope rating. For comparison Erin Hills 7700 tips and Whistling Straights 7100 tees are 145. I was thrilled to put together a 96 (~12 hdcp), especially considering I started double, triple, double, double.
A couple thoughts for anyone who may care. The challenge comes from so many angles. You need to be very long and accurate off the tee because:
- The rough is so penal. If you are just slightly off the fairway you are in some very thick rough.
- The fairways do not bleed into the greens as they are surrounded by rough and plentiful bunkers themselves. So hacking out of the rough means just further up the fairway without an opportunity to run it to the green. At that point you still need to execute.
- So many greens are elevated, which combined with the length of the course means you have to hit a lot of high, soft, long irons to have any chance of hitting greens. That is not a personal strength for me (or I'd guess many double digit handicappers). So I hit alot of low-ish 5 irons into greenside bunkers.
- The walk is exhausting. My shins and hamstrings are so sore.
The one reprieve out there are the greens. They are not tricky and have very manageable speed, which is the only thing that saved my score.
That being said, highly recommend getting out there if you haven't. A couple pics:
