I've made it my mission to get back into or really start playing more. I played more often late high school and college and then it was expensive and time consuming so it got cut out.

Now I'm looking to improve and get more time in and enjoy that time.

I recently took a lesson, have a second scheduled and will follow with a third not long after. With the vision being to just be more consistent.

Plan is to look for a new set of irons and possible woods/drivers in the fall. Everything I read and watch says "try everything" wtf is that even supposed to mean honestly. Are there places I can go hit other iron types? I currently have 3 friends who golf, none associated with the other and my FIL who now lives retired at their lake house 4hr away, so my options of who to go play with are fairly slim.

Yes, hit everything but realize you will likely be limited to a certain category of iron. As a relative beginner, you don't need to bother with blades, for instance. Stay with game improvement models. That'll narrow down quite a bit.

If you are near a major city, go to PGA Tour Superstore. They have a hitting bay for every major manufacturer. Figure out what you like, find something comparable in a used set until you're really ready to upgrade/invest.

I have irons I'm using currently. Had them since college though, they're nearly 20yrs old. I also recently learned they're stiff shafts and the lie was adjusted before I naught them.

What I'm asking though is how do you "try everything" PGA store, do I need to pay or reserve something? Are there other places I can try different makes, models, etc. this is the Crux of my question. That try everything statement means nothing to me at the moment

Find out when courses do demo days and start there.

If you want to limit your time trying "everything", try titleist, Taylor made, and callaway…maybe mizuno. I honestly could find a set I like with any of those manufacturers. If you're really good, the biggest factor is the shaft, not the club head.

I prefer my info from Texags rather than Google or other sources….so what is the differences with shafts? My greenhorn assumption is the more flex the shaft has the more power you'll be able to transfer into the ball. From stiff, to regular, to senior, Steel to Graphite….?

Just ask the guy that you take lessons from. Then find them on ebay or similar. At this stage, trying everything is kinda ridiculous. Your swing isn't consistent enough yet. Dude will recommend a few major label sets. You will play with them for a couple years and then want something new. That is the time to get all loco on this. Not this go round.

The harder you swing, the more the shaft will flex, eventually to a point where the face won't line up where you want. You can't swing really hard and actually make contact until you are well experienced. So, regular shafts until you get consistent and swing hard. Stiff, once you get there.
Probably oversimplified this and pissed off half the posters, but whatever.

You want the shaft to release correctly for you...its heavily dependent on swing speed. Shaft can also help in launching the ball at optimal height...about 110 feet. Shaft can also help with dispersion (left and right)

Club head combo with right shaft will hopefully launch the ball at the correct height, with correct spin, and come down with a good decent angle

No, you don't need to pay to demo clubs. Start by walking into a store and asking questions. You'll figure it out pretty quick. Plenty of folks in there who are paid to help you demo the things they sell.

Not that popular evidently as most are hung up on their favorite name brand.

For irons, focus on finding your correct lie angle and length. Then find a head design and loft progression that give you the best forgiveness and distance consistency.

There's no magic equipment or magic moves in golf swing.

Two non equipment recommendations here: 1) golf shorts length above the knee, this isn't 1996 and 2) golf hats, just don't buy a hat that looks like it could be sold at Walmart.

Looking the part can mask some bad golf. Trust me, I know.

best way to mask bad golf is to play fast or keep up.

And don't bet against old golfers with a push cart, ball retriever, iron covers...and especially the ones carrying battery operated leaf blower on his push cart.
