I'm interested in getting into volunteering for a DFW golf event (and I may be too late for this year). Anyone done this for the Byron, Colonial, etc?

I have some experience in hospitality and outdoor events but I'd love feedback if anyone has any!

Yes. Quite a few times. Walking scorer.

Given you saying quite a few times, I assume it's been worth it?

My dad has volunteered for Colonial (scorers hut) the last 15+ yrs and really enjoys it. The free round at Colonial is also a perk for volunteers.

He's also volunteered for all the US Opens since 2010. Usually gets stuck in merch tent.

I volunteered once for the KFT event at TPC Colorado. Never again. Paid $100 for the opportunity and got a pullover and some sandwiches to stand in the 95 degree heat with no shade for a couple days. The volunteer golf day ended up being a Tuesday in October that I couldn't even make.

I was a walking scorer at the BMW at Medinah in 2019 and it was a blast. I had Mark Leishman in the pro-am, and then DJ, Justin Rose and Web Simpson on Friday.

If you have the opportunity to do it, I would recommend it.

I was the standard bearer when I was 17… I had Fulton Allem, who shot 78 and smoked about the same about of cigarettes… and Bob May who shot 77, right before he dueled Tiger in the 99 PGA.

I had shot 72 on that course in a tournament earlier that year… weird day, to say the least… but that's golf.

Discovered golf in May of 2010, attended my first PGA event in 2011 at the Shell Houston Open, as a volunteer for the roping committee.

At the time the event was still at Redstone (the Golf Club of Houston), and Phil won that year. After the trophy presentation, a group of us volunteers got to take a picture with him on the 18th green. Fun times.

I did driving range for the Texas Open and hole marshal for the Houston Open spotting balls. Both were great opportunities well under $100 which came with polos, pullovers, 4 tickets, meals during shifts, and a parking pass. I only worked one day/ one shift for each event which made it completely worth it. For the driving range, I would hang out in a tent sorting out all the various balls and then handing them out to the players as they came by. Definitely a good opportunity to meet and interact with nearly every player since they all come through the driving range at some point.

I was a marshal at the MatchPlay for two years and had a lot of fun.

Practice rounds the guys are a little loose and interacted a bit, caddies especially.

Tournament rounds, depending on where you're placed, you get to hear a bit of the back and forth between the players/caddies which I find interesting.
