shaft weight

So over the years as I have gotten older I have gone lighter in the shaft weight of my irons (65g) thinking that is just what old guys are supposed to do. Inconsistent has always been the word to describe me on the course. I will shoot 80 one day and 94 the next.

So today I meet a buddy to play 18 and when I arrive at course I forgot I took my clubs out of trunk on Thursday night to let my son hit them after school. My only option is to rent clubs at course. I was given a set of Mavricks with 80 gram shafts. These things felt light a barbell compared to what I am used to.

Long story short I was crushing long, straight, and high balls all day long. Could this higher shaft weight make it easier to stay on plane? Distance was only about +5 yards-which is also confusing because there was no way I had a faster swing speed, but no hooks, slices, etc all day long. I was hitting fairways and greens throughout the entire round.

Any explanation and has anyone else found success with heavier shaft weight?

65gram shaft in irons? I assume they're graphite. If so, the torque rating (twist) is above 4 degrees, most likely. Typical steel shaft is at 2 deg or below, hence less left and right dispersion. Sure you can get graphite iron shaft with less torque but they will be heavier and expensive.

Not sure how old you are but lighter iron shaft to me is 85 to 95 grams considering typical std DG 300S is 130 grams.

So there's the total weight of the club and there's the swing weight. Swing weight provides the feel of the weight of the clubhead when you hold the club and this feel can be consistent regardless of the shaft weight. This is whole another topic.

My current set has 95 gram steel shafts and i doubt I will ever go lower than 85 grams as I will stay with steel and not graphite unless I can find graphite with less than 2 deg torque.

For me, iron has to provide accuracy and consistency, especially shorter irons. I don't think I can get that with a cheap set of graphite shafts.

Yes, I am a pretty typical upper 40s out of shape white dude who's athlete accomplishments are a distant memory.

The current shafts are the graphite KBS tour in 65g.

I think I am starting to follow what you guys are saying. For example...

The new great big bertha irons are designed with a D1 shaft weight with a super heavy tungsten head.

Taylormade 790s are a D2 (slightly heavier shaft) with a lighter weighted head.

What would be the advantage/disadvantage of these two versus the other?

D1 and D2 are swing weights and not shaft weights. D2 regardless of the shaft and total weight of the club will feel heavier than D1.

Typically D2 is the standard swing weight.

And swing weight is really about the distribution of the weight throughout club.

Anecdotally speaking, I feel heavier total weighted club keeps me more balanced throughout the swing.

You can get D2 swing wight with any shaft.

Sorry didn't address ur club question.

And you're too ****ing young to be using 65gram noodle graphite in your irons. Dude. Get you a set with 105 gram shaft at least...

Funny story pertinent to the topic.

I ordered TM P790s a few weeks ago. I replaced Srixon Z965s.

I've been fitted a few times and thought I needed +1 / +1".

Srixon have X / 120g graphite shafts. I decided to go down to S / 125g in the new TMs.

Turns out my current clubs are only +.5", and I'm guessing the heads are lighter, too. With a longer/heavier shaft and likely heavier head, I went from C8 to D8 swing weight. I think it's going to be great long term for consistency, but this purchase got me back into strength training so I can handle them this spring.

I went from KBS Max MT Stiff at 85g, +0" to a club fitter putting me in Project X LS 6.0 at 120g, +1/2". It's like an entirely different game. The clubs feel heavier, but my swing is much, much smoother and the tempo is far better. I think I was way too quick with my lighter set.

It's almost like like the extra weight keeps me from swinging it like a wild ass, but that same extra weight (plus the extra length) comes through with more speed thanks to physics. I think I picked up like 5-8 MPH while feeling like I was swinging easier.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I assume you can get an 85-100g shaft in a regular flex? My iron swing speed is only in mid/upper 70s...
