I am coaching a HS golf team now and I want to buy a portable launch monitor to help the guys and girls dial in yardages and know their numbers better.

The places we practice all have tee boxes at the range that are on plateau like tee boxes, with really no land behind them to place a Mevo+ (as an example), or a Rapsodo.

How do others handle this - tripod? Reason I ask I was told by Mevo support that tripod/suspension is not reliable due to the radar signal dispersion or whatever...

curious how others deal with this

I tried all those "behind the ball ones" and always ran into the same problems. The easiest solution is spend a little more on a skytrak, but I know that's not the best answer.

I returned the others, and have had the skytrak for years without any of the same issues.

SkyTrak sets from the side?

Yessir. Was the only solution for my garage setup without opening the door. Also works perfect on the range with a phone/ipad without taking up crazy space

ok wow only a few hundred more than Mevo+

Swing caddies only needs 3-5' and I can usually hit from the front of the marked off location and be fine.

It's a little mentally unstable with the monitor that close but after a few swings you realize that you won't hit it.

the range I go to literally is a mat, and behind it are two steps and then a curb, so there is no space to put anything, so even 3' I think won't work

I'd be willing to bet if it's a normal size mat, you could put your front foot as forward as possible and the SC at the back and it would work.

I have done it before.

sounds like a recipe for damage to the device...wanting to use this for my high school team, but yeah that's an option. The photo above - I think are good size mats but other ranges are not at all - maybe 4' deep at most

I use a Garmin 6.5' behind my ball on my mat at home and the range. Works pretty well (especially for the money), but you do need a little room.

They look moveable -- why not place a mat behind the one they are hitting on?

Or if you are handy you could build a 4' platform out of plywood & 2x4s, and place it behind the mat.

I would build something simple like this

simple table with leveling feet

another leveling feet video

I would place a club or something on the mat extending out to the concrete, then measure from the from the shaft to the concrete (hope that make sense) that will basically tell you the height difference from the concrete to the top of the mat. Scale down the table you build just big enough for your Mevo or whatever you get and build it just short of whatever height distance you determine and then you can level it easily with the leveling feet. Pretty cheap and simple build. Have the woodworking shop at your high school do it, will be a good engineering project for them.

Not sure what your budget is but if you wanted to be the envy of all high school coaches you might look into this program....basically a GC Quad for a 50% discount. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it since it goes off to the side and your team would look like the PGA pro's warming up on the range, haha, one can dream right.

Tell me again, why is a tripod not the answer?

because if the camera is elevated it is going to screw up the reading as the radar scatters off the ground and is reflected back to the monitor.

That is the argument. I have no idea how much it would be affected.

I'll second the Sky Caddie. It doesnt do a lot but does exactly what you want. Sets up 3-5 feet behind you. I have it on the back of the mat. My numbers are extremely close.

folks - see image earlier in the thread - this is not for home use it is for where we practice, and other courses are setup the same - there is no room really behind to set something level with the ground

Cap, does my post up above make sense? I think that might be your best bet, building a small platform, maybe 12"x12", with the homemade leveling feet. Just build it to where it sits just below mat level and then use the leveling feet to bring it up to level. Very simple build nothing fancy then you can place your monitor level with the mat as far back as you need.

I am not sure what you are looking to spend but I have been looking at a Mevo+, then add the Pro Pack add-on and then add the Face Impact add on, I think that would total to about $3500, but that is a ton of data for that price tag, I think anything you could want for your team, very portable too.

it all makes sense yes, but I am not carrying an apparatus around to the various course I go to. If I was building something for home where it is always the same, then a) I would have more room and b) would be more inclined to customize
