Replacing iron shafts, where to buy, what to know?

I have newish irons, 2 years old but want a heavier shaft in a regular flex. I currently play stiff 85 gram shafts, I did a fitting and found dynamic gold 105 in regular flex work and feel better. Dang, just replacing shafts would be close to $500. Wondering where do you buy your iron shafts and is this a do it yourself job? Watched a few videos and between weighing and cutting to length seems more complex than I was thinking. Heck, new irons is only $500 more maybe I should do that.

Just swapped shafts on a set of irons I bought. Pretty easy as outlined above. Mine was a little more involved because I used new shafts and had to cut to length and regrip, but still easy and saves a ton of money.

If you use standard length and spend some time looking, you can buy "pulls" with perfectly good grips for under $150.

What do you use to clean the inside of the head?

Are grips just as easy?

It's hard to find pulls with what I want so my cost estimate is to buy new, cut, supplies, and re-grip. $450-500. I'll check eBay again see what's there.

I just looked and if you need .370s, there is a set of 105g Elevate R300s for $110 right now. Anything else is around $250. I would just wait and keep looking until you find what you want.
Another option is to find an older set of irons with the shafts you want and swap with yours and then resell them.

It may take you some time to find what you want, but waiting and looking can save you a ton of money.

I saw that set. There are 6 and were cut down a half inch. I thought about it. I need 7. Also, I did a free fitting with Mizouno today and the DG 105 were good but kbs tour lite had a better flight profile. Whatever. Can this go on the "F" golf thread? It's almost easier to just buy the new irons with right shaft and trade in what I have.

You aren't alone. I've talked myself into buying a new set to get the shafts I want, while selling the old. And net/net it actually worked out just fine. Key being the demand for what you are selling to fetch a solid price

What are you currently playing? Chances are someone on texags would want to buy them.

It it were me, I wouldn't want to test my rookie shaft pulling and installation skills on a set of 2 year old gamers. It sounds easy and probably is, but it would probably take me forever and I'd be terrified of messing something up. On top of that, I have a hard time trusting eBay with anything golf related.

Sell your current set and buy what you want (probably a model newer). Gotta think the $ difference between this and installing shafts on your own would be negligible.

All depends on what kind of money you want to spend and how hard you want to look. In DFW there are plenty of places other than ebay to find "pulls" so I would assume there would be just as many in the Houston area. You can often find them on Facebook Marketplace as well.

I don't think trading in maximizes the value of what you have - selling out-right will bring more. But, if you don't want the hassle, it is an option.

Let us know what you end up doing.

My plan is to look for a new set of irons with the shaft I was fit for and ideally pay same or just slightly more for the set than I would for new shafts. I'll likely keep my current clubs and sell online but not trade in. Currently gaming 2021 Callaway Apex DCB 5-AW with TT Elevate 85 shafts.

I don't disagree with anything here but the timing that JJ is using.

I've done a zillion grips...yes, they are easy if you have the setup.

I've only done a partial zillion shafts, but no way I could do a set in an hour and there is some intricate parts to it. Drilling out the head and making sure to get 100% of the old epoxy out without cutting into the hosel takes patience and using the right stuff.

TLDR--you can do this, but you need to understand what you're doing and allow more time that mentioned here.

The other issue is getting the weight right -- you can't just epoxy the head onto the shaft.

You either need a swingweight scale, or weigh all of your components, take precise measurements, and use an online calculator to generate swingweight estimates.

It is a pretty fun project learning the process. But it isn't a quick fix -- or even a cheap one if you are just going to do it once.

I left out the part that I worked in a golf shop in Plano after college that a buddy owned to help him out. So, when my son started playing competitively, I set up a shop in our basement so he could do grips, light repairs, etc. for the locals at our club. Fun fact, I built a set for Roy Tarpley back then...HUGE grips....many wraps....

The expense of setting up the shop(in a way that makes it easier) is likely too much if you are just doing this one time.

As for the swing weight stuff above, as long as you have the components that you have researched together, the epoxy shouldn't be a factor. Well...unless you're Tiger Woods....

Agree, it's a fun thing to learn

I just looked up Dynamic Gold 105 pricing on Golfworks. Are you ****ing kidding me...$37 per piece???

If I was looking for a whole set of shaft, I'd start at Play it again sports and look for a full set of irons less than $200 with either Dynamic Gold Lite or Dynalite, with a same hosel diameter. Both are tried and true, True Temper shafts around 105 grams. You might get more height from Dynalite.

Then pull...not hard to pull steel shaft with a $14 heat gun from Harbor Freight.

And these shafts should be properly tipped and butt trimmed.

I would use a drill and sand paper to remove all remnant epoxy.

I'd insert shock dampening foam in the shaft before I install the grip though.

I did something similar a few years ago. Bought all the basic stuff from Golfworks: hosel brush, swingweight scale, sets of weights, epoxy, etc. I use a kitchen torch to pull shafts. Maybe $250 total invested.

I reshafted a number of sets, and replaced grips, etc. Largely just experimenting on the cheap.

My big project was attempting to MOI match 718 CBss -- which was somewhat complicated. Seemed to work out, and I still have them as a backup.

Kudos to you for the MOI match!!!

Did you cut in 3/8" increments?
To the extent I could -- I had second half shafts, so I had to adjust the lengths a bit for a couple of the irons -- offset with headweights.

I made a whole excel spreadsheet with formulas to get them as close as possible. It resulted in pretty dramatic shifts in swingweight from like D6 on the PW to D0 on the 5 iron (as I recall).

Don't know if it helped me play better, but it was a fun Covid project.

Any recommendations on a reasonably priced swing weight scale?

In the Metroplex FB Marketplace there is a set of 2016 Calloways with brand new KBS Tour Lite shafts and new grips for $300.
You could probably get them for a little less, swap the shafts out of your irons and sell the older Callaways for at least $200-$250.
If you didn't feel comfortable swapping the shafts, you could pay someone to do it and still come out way ahead.

Honestly something like this is all you really need. Really depends on how precise you want to get. You can't physically feel the difference between D1 and D1.5-D2.

https://www.golfworks.com/the-golfworks-economy-swingweight-scale/p/vswc/

That is what I bought. It works well enough.

I did the MOI matching without it -- I did the calculations by measuring the center of balance and all the components.

The formula is here:

http://golf.okrasa.eu/language/en/clubs/moi-en/moi-plan-en/

I created an excel spreadsheet where I could adjust the difference in components to get the MOI as close as possible. The fact that different examples of the same grip vary by 1-3 grams makes you crazy when you are trying to be precise.

After all this talk, now I want to put away the ZX7s and play the MOI matched 718 CBs -- just to reassess whether it is actually helpful, and was worth the effort!

I have a compressor and hose at home.

Thanks Gents.

This is the one I use. It's not for use with a compressor, but I have never split a "decent" grip with it.
