Walking the course…preventing blisters

I am looking for any recommendations on preventing blisters/hot spots while walking. A buddy and I walk 18 holes pretty much every time we play now so we can get some exercise and hopefully help us lose weight.

On average it is about 8.5 miles of walking for 1 round. One day we walked 27 and I had to basically lay up a couple days due to both my feet being blistered.

I'm thinking I need different type socks other than cotton but not sure what would be best. What do the pros wear walking multiple rounds day after day?

I can tell you I have a lot more respect for the pros walking all the time. Have been walking now for a couple months and don't think I can do more than 2 straight days of walking the course at this point. I know people think golf is easy but I bet 99% of golfers can't walk a round back to back.

If you have properly fit shoes that are broken in, and a sock that isn't paper thin, you shouldn't have blisters.

I walk a TON, and the only time I get blisters is breaking in new shoes. Usually, a thicker winter sock for a few rounds saves that.

You need to invest in some good shoes that fit right.

Personally for walking I like the spikeless, lightweight, athletic type shoe that's water resistant.

If they're quality shows that fit well it shouldn't matter sock you wear.

Get Kentwool socks, walked five straight days at Bandon, no blisters. Try a pair and see.

Agree with others. It's probably your shoes and not the socks. If you're not wearing spikeless tennis style shoes id try a pair out.

Thanks for the replies. I tend to blister towards the front of my foot. Basically the spot of the foot you would be on if you try to stand on your toes. Not sure what part of the foot that is called lol.

I have walking shoes that fit great and wear them usually but one day we walked 27 holes and I had a blister on each foot. Im going to research those kentwool socks and try that out. I think all my socks are cotton which aren't great for heavy walking.

I will say all shoes and socks all get worn out towards the front of my foot. Heel is always fine. Attached is a pic of a shoe I wear just around the house. Not my normal walking shoe. You can see at the front of the shoe there it is worn significantly.

Get new running/walking shoes, there are places to get professionally fit for them.

I'd say don't worry about having big spiked golf shoes, lots of running shoes out there with nubs on the bottom of them to provide plenty of grip on tee boxes and fairways. I switched to regular sneakers and like playing in them much more.

I also started wearing thicker cotton socks with the heel pad on the back, as if I do blister its on the top of the heel.

Sounds like you could use some insets in your shoes. Superfeet is a solid over-the-counter brand you can start with.

Like others said, probably the shoes. I walk most rounds and changed up my shoes and have no issues now.

Put these in the fridge for when you do get a blister

I'd suggest building calluses and endurance takes time. As a former runner, I'd have friends in college (and post graduation) ask how they could increase their mileage so they could run a marathon/ half marathon. Usually they were non runners so their base was a mile or 2 here and there. Mostly anyone can do that. So I'd suggest run 3-5 miles 2-3 times and then scale back. Then after recovering from that increase to 4-5, maybe 6 miles twice a week and 2-3 miles once that same week. Basically you will probably find success starting easy. Get blisters and tired. Back off then increase the load. Rinse and repeat.

Practically speaking: Walk in a good pair of shoes twice a week with 2 days of recovery in between. Have a pair to rotate into. Next week walk every other day (walk 18-day off-walk 9-day off-walk 18). Next week maybe walk 27 and ride the rest of the week. Next week 3x18, with 2 of them in consecutive days. Build up to it. Rome wasn't built in a day.

As you build muscle strength & endurance and possibly lose weight, build calluses…all of that equates to easier walking. The pros do have caddies and that helps as well.

FWIW I'm sorry if I repeated anything said by anyone else. I decided to type without reading anything other than your post.

Also play in cozy tennis shoes sometimes. My high school girl golfers will wear Hokas at times. You don't always have to wear golf shoes.

I have lousy feet. No arches.

It took me a long time to find shoes that didn't destroy my feet. Nike, Foot Joy, and Adidas; cheap pairs, expensive pairs, spikes, nubs, you name it. My feet would always get ripped up something awful.

Skechers Go Golf are the only ones I've tried that didn't give me blisters. A couple weeks ago I walked 36 on Monday, 18 Wednesday, 18 Thursday. This was at Bandon and Torrey Pines (brag) so not easy walks. Feet were totally fine. They might not be great for everyone but they are great for me.

Best socks I've found are Balega Hidden Comfort. They're running socks but have just the right amount of cushion. The crew and quarter socks from Balega are also good but the Hidden Comforts are the best.

If you are going to walk regular, don't scrimp on shoes. Think about the miles built up and over the years it's not only your feet that get the punishment. I've walked most of my golfing life and early on being young and dumb, I was more into bargains. Well worth the money for dry, comfortable feet.

As someone who has suffered plantar fasciitis, replace your shoes every 4 months or so and don't wait until the sole wears out. Based on your photo those shoes have lost all means of support and cushioning. Make sure they fit.

I found a good shoe for me and I buy two pair at a time and rotate and buy new ones more frequently than I used to. PF just disappeared.
