Anyone played it yet? I've heard its incredible. Apparently Jordan Spieth played there after getting eliminated at the Dell Match Play and broke the course record.

I strongly disagree....I've played at least 10 and they are all incredible!!! Almost all are Fazio.

Gozzer Ranch is in a lot of top 100 list. Spanish Oaks was originally a Discovery property and is usually ranked top 10-15 in the state. Haven't played Gozzer but Spanish is a lot of fun.

I have played all of these. Gozzer and Spanish oaks are the only courses worthy of discussion.

This tells me you haven't played them because Spanish is bottom of the list for sure…

I'm a legacy member of two of them. I'm not saying they aren't a great time, but as far as strictly evaluating the golf courses, generally there's nothing amazing about them. They're made to sell lots

Conditions and amenities are always fantastic. Fazio courses bore me pretty quickly. He always gets fantastic land and huge budgets and builds courses that all "resemble" each other. 4 Par 3s playing different directions, at least one driveable par 4, 1 par 5 you can get to in 2, 1 you can never get to in 2, and 2 in the middle. You can never see the cart paths from the tee or fairway - a great thing unless you are cart paths only when you play.

They are all very good designs, but none of them are really memorable to me - and I have played more than a few. The land they are built on often makes them memorable, but generally not the course itself.

He built Vaquero and the course at Stonebriar in the Metroplex within a year of each other with 2 different lead designers that worked for him. I would argue that the Stonebriar course was a "better job" by them. The property was an old wheat/corn field with about 6' of elevation change over the whole property. Vaquero is a much better course, but on a great piece of land. The Stonebriar course is a good golf course, but not memorable in any way.

Spanish Oaks was designed by Bobby Weed, fyi.

Every comment is just an opinion, but Driftwood isn't great, again my opinion. Service and amenities are over the top, but the course is nothing special.

TMfrisco is right.
Most DLC courses are good not great. Built to fit a certain model and sell lots.
Over the top amenities and impeccable service.
Golf course is predictable Fazio.

Driftwood has a cool driving range with Trackman and a super relaxed vibe.
The golf course is barely top 25 in the state - architecturally speaking.

Well worth a round if you get the invite, but unfortunately NOT a great golf course.

I do think Fazio has designed some great golf courses but only a few are DLC.

Gozzer Ranch is the best DLC course.

Congaree and Estancia are two of my favorite Fazio courses and Congaree is the least "Fazio" of any Fazio that I have played.

I'm a member at Spanish oaks and would say it stacks very favorably up against the best in the state. I have played a number of discovery properties and think people conflate conditioning and amenities with how "good" the golf course is, from a design perspective.

Discovery properties are always going to have great conditioning and amenities. What they don't have sometimes, is a "great" golf course from a design perspective. Driftwood is just that. Fantastic conditioning, prestige of super expensive homes, Ferraris in the parking lot, etc, but the course is not incredibly memorable. As a non discovery example but in the upper echelon of private courses in the state, take Escondido for example. Amazing conditioning and over the top amenities, but imo a very forgettable Fazio layout that's usually in fantastic condition.

I've been at Spanish for 12 years and have never once felt bored or repetitive with the golf course. Is it the "best" design layout and conditioning, absolutely not, but it's extremely solid in all categories.

Would tend to agree that the course layout at Spanish is much more unique than Escondido or the other properties previously mentioned. However I would say that Escondido is kept in better shape than Spanish year round

I wish I had the justification and ability to nitpick about design/conditions of Spanish, Driftwood, etc. All of those courses are fantastic, and I'd love to be able to say that I am a member of any of them.

You are 100% correct. But Escondido gets probably 1/4 the play Spanish does these days…. Covid brought new members streaming in and the course is showing it with all the increased play.

That being said, the course is closing at the end of this year for a complete redo so that should hopefully reinvigorate the conditioning to be back to top tier as it was for many years before covid.
