Played in one this weekend with a buddy, and wanted to get thoughts from more experienced golfers on whether an alternating shot tourney is harder or easier than playing on your own. The real advantage we had was both teed off on every hole. We used 15 of my tee shots, but the 3 we didn't use were really bad shots so I know if I played on my own I'd have scored a double or triple bogey on each. We shot a gross score of 75 which shocked the hell out of both of us.

That's a modified alternate shot format, and is a lot easier than true alternate shot with only one tee ball.

I don't ever feel like true alternate shot is an easy format. I never really enjoy playing it because you seem to be grinding over every shot to not let your partner down. Even more so than just playing my own ball.

Our MGA tournament this weekend had a 6-6-6 format (BB-alternate-scramble). My partner and I were pretty happy to shoot even in the alternate portion. We always have a "don't apologize" rule in case of a bad shot.

I played the format you mentioned one time with a buddy at a tournament several years ago. I was an 18 or so HCP, and he about a 10. We scored 78 or 79. Was blown away at that score, but we complimented each others game well that day.

True alternate shot is really hard. My partner and I have a rule that if you say sorry you have to take a shot. By about the 10th hole we don't really care anymore that we're gonna shoot 85.
