So, I turn 50 in two weeks, and my goal is to be in my best shape since college. I've been losing weight, hitting the gym working on strength and flexibility. Mission accomplished on the goal, and an added perk is my swing speed is getting better. I was a little below 90, now I am pushing 100. Everything that I have is regular flex shafts.

I feel great, so I am going to continue to focus on my health, so I am going assume that I will continue to make gains in my golf game as well. When should I consider switching to stiffer shafts? What should I look for in my ball flight to see if I need to maybe consider a change? I really enjoy an easy swing, I don't really try and muscle anything up. I hit my drives around around 250ish. Is it time to do a fitting, or should I wait longer?

what shaft are you currently using and did you notice your ball flight is higher, more spin and mis hits more exaggerated?

For my G400 driver it is a Aldila Phenom 70 3.5 Regular. I'd say right now, I am not noticing any trends in my ball flight, other than just added distance from when I began this journey last year. My mi****s are just as sucky as they have always been.

Love to hear the health goals coming along!

If you're driving 250 and swinging 100mph, you can definitely fit into the stiff shaft range. You could get fancy with it and say whenever you reach your next fitness goal, you'll go get fitted for shafts.

Most fitters will say if your driver swing speed is below 105, they will start with regular flex. Certainly isn't a hard rule but a guide on where to start.

I would get a quality fitting, each manufacturer has a different spec for Regular, stiff, or X-stiff. If your numbers are good, just pick the one that has the best feel to you, don't worry about if it has R or S on the shaft. Just my two cents.

Go throw a few bucks at a fitting. Compare what you have vs what "they" say fits. The sim will give you a good preview.

The difference in a high quality custom fitting vs a diy will be as much over even more than the improvement in strength and conditioning.

I didn't believe it until I had one done and the combination is definitely not something I could buy off the rack. 15-20 yards, straighter and higher.
