I have a back corner of my yard that I've considered converting into a practice green. Anyone done similar? Prep work, cost etc?

I'd prefer to do something myself rather than pay someone.

Depending on where you live and size but $9-10/sqft for regular turf, usually $2-4 more for putting green.

I don't know anything about your talents, but I don't think it's a worth it diy job. Lots of soil prep rocks etc

Cruelly considering slightly elevating it so that I could put in clean fill and I would assume sand base for the turf. This would also ensure it doesn't flood/wash out…I'm in Houston and these things need to be considered

My advice, spend the money and get it done right. Synthetic Turf world did mine. Mike is an absolute professional who knows golf! That's the key. Any schlub can throw down turf. He gives the putts, reads, speeds you want. So so worth it
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

I saw the work the guys put into mine, and I would NOT try to do it myself. It was a huge job. Mine's approximately 25 x 15

Both my neighbors have one like your, overlooking their pool. Thing is, I never see them using it. Do you use yours as much as you thought? I have a perfect place for one but think my wife will kill me do to resell value. She thinks it looks ugly...

I use it a lot yes. I also have three sons that play golf and practice on it. They play knockout style games with each other too.

I haven't used it much this summer because of the intense evening heat. But I used it alot during the winter and spring. I'm not moving in the next decade, sp resale value was not a concern for me.

If you could plan for it to be shaded in the afternoon or evening, that would be more useful. Morning sun doesn't matter but you don't want to putt on it if its 100+ and in the sun.

We also did our entire backyard in turf around the pool so that area was either going to be regular turf, decorative landscaping, or rock hardscape. I'm happy with this choice. I also think it looks visually more interesting than plain turf or grass. Our putting green was in the $20/sq ft range though. Here's the other surrounding areas (pool and furniture, patio, etc were not completely finished at the time of these photos, but you get the idea):

Can't say I hate that lush green either.

Great job, how are you liking the turf? Hot? Do you have dogs?

I did both of my last 2 backyards completely in turf. Once you have it, you never want grass again. Only thing to make sure of is if doing a putting green, don't have regular grass next to it. The clippings will get all in the turf and drive you nuts.

I agree. My palms drop basically nothing, but crap from the neighbors' trees blows onto my turf and drives me nuts.

I have a 15 pound dog that pees and poops on the turf and its not an issue - the urine drains away and he makes so little that I only rarely smell it - a water hose, sprinkler run (mine are set up to water the turf if needed), or rain takes it away. We pick up the poop once or twice a week.

It does get a bit hot on the hottest summer days, but so does the concrete - so I just wear sandals

It really is not that difficult if you have the time, although I may have had it easier because my yard already had a decent slop so not much prep was really needed. The manufacturer reviewed my yard and all that was recommended was killing off all the vegetation underneath, spread fabric, put 3-4" of DG down, and then lay the turf. I did put in some additional drainage where the walking path was going to be since I was grading the yard back toward the walking path. For the putting green I installed, I also brought in some mason sand to fill in all the micro pits in the DG to ensure a truly uniform surface. Its been almost three years now since the install was finished and have had no issues with turf movement or drainage.

Before (Really "in progress". Forgot to take a true "before" pic before I tore out our deck)

Yard prep

Putting green prep

Turf pick-up

Yard turf install (two nights)

Finished install

The yard turf came from turf factory direct. They do not charge taxes on all out of state purchases so even with freight it was still cheaper than buying locally. The putting turf came from PurchaseGreen. They sell remnants and this area was small enough that the turf was less than $2/sf. Since my labor is "free", the finished costs was just over $4/sf.

Did you just put decomposed granite down?

When they did ours it was larger stones first and then granite over that, I'd be concerned with just granite about drainage/settling

So the putting green area was actually prepared with 4-6" of 1" gravel then a 2" top layer of DG. This was because I was purposely grading the area to be flat. The rest of the yard is at such a slope that the water is going to sheet off before it can percolate down. In the past 2-1/2 years with this system, that hasn't been a storm come through North Texas that has caused any pooling on any of the turf surfaces. I had one area of settlement about 6 months in but that was at my backyard irrigation valve boxes when that install crew did not backfill and compact their trenches properly. Took a couple hours to pull the turf back, add DG, compact, and reinstall the turf.

How long it it take you from start to finish? Any extra hands?

Took about a week working nights after work. My brother came over for about 20 minutes on the nights where I had to drag the roll into the yard itself. The rolls are 15'x50'. Just short enough to set it in the garage, unroll it down the driveway, fold it in half twice so it is slim enough to drag down the alley so it could then be dragged back up through the gate I built in the corner of the yard for access. Once it was in the yard, it's no different from carpeting a room. Each roll would take a few hours of staking, cutting, and stretching to get it in place. The putting green took a few hours one night by itself. The hardest part about the putting green is getting the cup depth just right.

I've seen some putting greens that also look like that.

Thanks.

I just finished building a 12x12 platform for a sim studio. That turf is much heavier than I expected and I sucked at stretching it.

I've got a 30x20 area in the corner of my yard that a playground that my boys don't use sits on. It has playground tire rubber shreds so mostly the ground has been prepped for this. I'd need to remove the playground, clear the shreds, then start laying the base layers. I plan to have this large of a putting green, with fringe turf bordering it. We're on a half-acre and so with it being in the corner, we'd be able to have a nice 75 foot chip to the green. Great for my boys' short game.

How difficult was it for you to stake and stretch the turf? Thinking I may hire a carpet man for that part.

Also sitting here considering laying seed and buying a reel mower...

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for the kitchen setup (including the gazebo)?

I think it was around $17k as part of the pool project. That did not include the smoker which I already had. It has a fully shingled roof, overhead electrical, lighting, and ceiling fan.

I added the TV and speakers separately as part of the pool and back porch A/V system, but having the electrical already wired in made that easy.

I know there is quite a bit of money to be saved with a less elaborate roof (like a pergola), but that wouldn't be nearly as nice for the sun and rain either.
