I have 4 sons, 2 of them play regularly. Trying to prepare the last one for high school golf. He says let's play Friday night. I love my children, love spending time with them, love golf…it is hot as hell where I live, and I was like you sure and he says yep.
No warming up, no hitting balls he wants to go straight to the course and tee off after dinner… flat bellies. So we tee off at 6:45PM, I hit it short but right in the middle of the fairway on #1…he big balls it and hits it OB..
So I look up after my 4th Par and say..that's 4 Pars in a row. And he looks like a 5yr old with his outward emotions…
So my dad instincts kick in, hey slow your swing down, watch the ball..just strike the bal…"let's just play dad". OK.
So we keep playing along and on 7- a par three, I hit it flush it rolls back to about 4ft and I say "huh" hit it a little long…he hits it right to the bunker..bless his heart.
So I miss eagle putt on 8.."how are you putting for Eagle" and I say cause I hit it close to the hole.
He is a train wreck on 9…I hit it to the 150 marker in the middle of the fairway, hit it to 20ft miss the putt shoot 38..(+2)
So again I am a big encourager, love all my kids. Put my arm around him and say not everyone can be Jack Nicklaus…he squirms away. I do share with him he has to learn how to keep his emotions in check, forget the last shot and move on to the next hole. And don't worry about your playing partner unless you're playing Match play. He is a gamer and will be fine just a memorable dad memory. Walk into the house and his mother/my wife ask him how he played and he shares " played like crap"…I share he had a bad evening..she asks meI said I played the best I have in a couple of years…and had fun…good dear.
