We knew they had to move it somewhere given how close it is to the fires but i was hoping they would have been able to find a host course that we haven't seen before (or not very often) since it's a rare one-off situation.

Torrey obviously makes a ton of sense and they can keep a lot of the infrastructure from this week in place but it's sorta lame at the same time.

Very lame. Now we're doublely subjected to Torrey. I'd like to think they would change the conditions significantly like cutting the rough in a different way or very different green speeds and pin locations but I'm not hopeful.

Great, we get to see the most overrated course twice in one year.

I find this take interesting. I'd rather play Torrey than Pebble. A fraction of the cost, similar views, and you don't have to pretend to be uppity.

I also enjoy breakfast at the grill and dinner and drinks at La Jolly over Carmel for the same reasons.

lol wtf does that have to do with watching two pro tournaments there?

I like op was hoping we'd get something unique, but get why it's somewhere basically already set up.

His ridiculous comment was it's the most overated course. Which directly corelates to my response. It had nothing to do with the OP.

I think a ton of people in the golf world would agree it is the most overrated course on tour.

Because saying Torrey has the same views as Pebble Beach isn't ridiculous.

Not sure why it's overrated. One of the good aspects is that it tends to have more teeth than a lot of stops that are birdiefests where it takes -17 to -20 to win. Some years are easier than others depending on conditions, but outside of The Memorial, there aren't regular stops that -8 wins. Quite a few single digit under par winners here over the past 10 years

Yeah it's generally considered a very bland course. It's "teeth" just because of length and long rough. It's largely a forgettable course that happens to be on the water.

For a course they've been playing every year on tour for 30 years… how many specific holes can you envision? 3 or 4 maybe?

I can envision all of the holes. I still agree with you though.

Cold, rainy and windy. No wonder Tiger decided not to show. Spend some extra time grieving and resting.

Miserable out there.

I'm kind of with everyone else here thinking they could've done a little bit better than choosing Torrey for the second time this year. Logistically, I see how it makes sense

Riviera is actually one of my favorite stops on the tour and I hate that we didn't get to see it this year, I just kind of feel meh about this week. The weather sucks, I've seen this course already this year, it's just not very exciting

Id rather see TPC Scottsdale 2 weeks in a row. Torrey is incredibly boring. Long and straight
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

TV does a horrible job showing the character of the course. I've played it much more than any other high end course as my wife's family is all in San Diego.

The reason they can't really show it is the same reason it isn't bland or boring. The natural ravines interwound through half the courses remove a lot of OB / pedestrian area that would normally allow for better camera locations to maximize the ability to show the course. They also add great depth and contrast while playing. Many of which you hit over and you can't even really see ion TV. They just look like scrub brush or trees when on the course they're actually steep ravines hundreds of feet deep leading to the ocean below.

The teeth of the course is the narrow fairways surrounded by thick rough, the complex, small feeling multi-tiered greens, and the deep bunkers next to them. Most over your head. There's some flat spots in the fairways, but their few and far between. 90% of them either slant dramatically to the ocean or ravines or give difficult downhill lies. This isn't a course where you'll see bombers succeed. It's a very difficult technical course and the guys who can keep it in the fairway and are the best iron players generally do well.

Simple things like the hotel and grill on the property also add character not really seen at all on the broadcast. So do the paragliders that cruising up and down the course. They often feel like you can almost touch them or hit the with a bad tee shot. All the fighter jets and helos from all the airbases nearby always streaking out to sea. Or the fact the beach is like 1,000 feet below the course, but doesn't really come off that way on TV. And to say it's intimidating teeing off the 1st of either course with the raised patio fo the clubhouse and the patio fo the grill all watching is an understatement. We eat brunch there every trip even if not playing to watch the show.

The par 3, third hole on the South Course is my favorite. Which is kind of ironic as I don't think I've ever played it even par or better. There's a large drop in elevation to the narrow, horizontal 3 tiered green. It seems impossible to miss the front bunker or not fly it into the ocean. And even if you do hit the green, if it's not on the same tier as the flag, it's almost assured to be a 3 putt as that green is damn near impossible.

Torrey Is much more widely revered than on here. Just look at all the majors it's hosted (even recently with all the new snazzy courses). It has just as long and storied history as any other famous course.

Now that being said, the holes up against the hospital, parking lots, and driving range are blah comparitably.. But that really only 4 of 36 holes.

But we can agree to disagree. That's not surprising since I also enjoy the south course more than the north course.

Weather wise, It's a lot like Texas in that it will vary widely throughout any day. The difference is it will be predictable. I"ve heard more than one person say the weather reminds them of Scotland, but much more mild. It's southern California after all.

You're going to need layers to guard against the lowes in the 50s and chill of the water when teeing off in the morning. Strip off layers as it gets warm when the sky clears off and the sun comes out late in the morning. And then put them back on again when the gloom rolls in off the water in the afternoon (which is kinda sad and kinda cool to watch at the same time.)

The afternoon gloom probably also contributes to a lesser viewing experience as it's generally going to be that way as the leaders finish late in the afternoon.

Every time I've been to San Diego it's been cold AF whether that was January or July. Maybe I've just not been there when it's nice.

It's very different weather just 10 miles on either side of town. Getting into the hills east removes the gloom and chill in the air no matter what time of year you go. Southeast to the desert is also very different.

We love going when middle of summer when it's miserable here. In the hills it's practically 65-75 deg and sunny. Winter can also be really nice if it isn't raining as they generally stay warmer. Spring and fall are crapshoots.

There's a reason I was very specific in that comparison.

California's are shocked their weather isn't unique in changing drastically throughout the day.

Rodgers waits for 10 minutes to hit his 3rd on 18. Changes clubs at the last minute. Then dumps it in the water. This will tighten up for tomorrow

That was something

Like bagger said, these guys are getting challenged.

If length and long rough is this course's only teeth...they may as well be from a great white.

I never got the hate for the course. 80% of the courses these guy play are birdiefests on courses that look the same. This is neither

I did the North-South double on the same day last spring break. That was fun.

The course is awesome. The limits to how they can present the coverage on TV is what sucks. Due to the geography. I feel like they could take some major swings at where they place cameras but they choose not to so we get what we get.

I like it better as a PGA venue than I do as a course to play if that makes sense. They can get it playing tough and I like seeing these guys work for it.

There is a really cool stretch of holes on the north course. The par 3 down to the water, the next one up the hill, and then the one over the arroyo.

On the south course, 13 is the only one that really stands out to me personally as particularly memorable to play. Plus 18 because of the history.

If I was in San Diego and could get on either, I'd take the north every time.
