Never been to Pinehurst, but the wife and I had a great time up in Wisconsin at Whistling Straights. Sheboygan and Kohler are neat downtown areas along the lake.

Done a Pinehurst package twice, the last time being last October.

Both times were a guys trip.

Did one last year, was awesome.

Stay in one of the 4 bdrm suites if you can, they extra room is nice.

Food is very meh other than the 1895 grille and breakfast at the main building

#2 is overrated, #8 was awesome, make plans to play the cradle at least one night if not multiple times

I did a trip with just the wife and I. I played 3 rounds. She drove into Southern Pines one day, shopped in the resort one day and did some spa stuff one day. She came over after I played #2, and we ate there and shopped and just goofed around there for a bit. We did the meal package too. My wife said she would go back again, so that's a good sign.

#2 was worth it just once. #8 was good but, to me, ranked third out of the three courses I played. Really enjoyed #4. Didn't get to play The Cradle.

Did it with our guys group a few years back and are going again this October.

It was a good guys trip. We did stay in one of the big houses and enjoyed that.

This was our groups second trip. Our first was Scotland so a very different vibe. I remember leaving pinehurst and saying that it was like Disney world for dads. To me, it seemed like mostly groups of guys. But that may have just been what stood out to me.

My wife and I, and another couple, are going there this summer. Have a guaranteed time on Irish Straits but going to try to change to Whistling Straits when it gets closer time-wise. Working our way around the lake for a few days on Mackinac Island after that.

#2 is great, but not one I need to play again
#4 best course out there
#8 is pretty basic and forgettable. Just a better version of plenty of courses you could play in TX.

I'm super interested in #10, which by all accounts is incredible.

I'd choose Southern Pines, Mid Pines or Pine Needles over #8.

I live in Southern Pines, let me know if you need real food recommendations.

I am doing a two night, three round package in early November as a staycation with the wife. Playing 2,4 and 10.

I have played The Cradle, 3 and 6 as a regular Joe. 3 is super unique and would probably play again. 6 almost felt like a muni.

Man shocked at the #8 hate, I really liked the course and thought the turtle shell greens were challenging.

To me 9 was a bust, didn't enjoy it and it was completely different than the other courses there

I didn't hate #8, but agree with the previous poster that it looks like a lot of other courses you can play. I actually played and rode with a Golf Digest rater while I was playing. We talked a lot about the course and he thought you could plunk the course down in Texas, Arizona, wherever, and it wouldn't look out of place. I couldn't really disagree. And, my comment about third of the 3 courses I played is considering the other two I played as well. #2 and #4.

My buddy and I went in 2023 after the Tennessee game. We did the Donald Ross package and added a night. We booked about a year out after the football schedule dropped. It was a very easy booking process. We had all of our tee times and dinner reservations done at booking. The agent we worked with was very helpful throughout the process.

Definitely not a cheap golf trip. We stayed at The Manor. Loved that hotel for a guys group. Hostess was one of the nicest people ever. They tag your bag with all your courses and tee times to shuttle them around. They give you a card for all your meals. Shuttle service is pretty good, but beware of the big groups as they can get annoying trying to bully on a bus

The breakfast buffet every morning was pretty awesome. Tons of different options. You can go light or really load up if you want a big breakfast or to kill a hangover. We had dinners at 1895, Carolina Room, and Pinehurst Brewing. On that package you can pick from any app, entree, and desert on the menu. The only upcharge I remember was a dry aged steak at 1895. I thought all the food was good. Alcohol is obviously extra. My buddy and I played a round on the putting course each evening before dinner with a bottle of wine/cocktails as the wager. IIRC, you don't tip anyone and they add a gratuity to everything. I think we just tipped shuttle drivers and our caddies.

We played #2, #4, #8, and the Cradle. I loved #2 but it is extremely difficult. Dont think you can go there and skip that course. #4 was the best course by far. Agree with others that #8 is fairly pedestrian. Id have rather just played the Cradle for 4 hours. The Cradle is an absolute blast. Play it as many times as you can and dont miss the chance to hang at the Cradle Crossing between rounds.

Each course has a signature cocktail that I would recommend trying out. It's pretty easy to spend $100 on transfusions in 60 minutes on the Cradle. All the courses have their own branded cups that were decent little gifts for friends back home. I came home with bags full of tees, ball markers, and cups for everyone since they are complimentary at each course.

We also played Tobacco Road which I would highly recommend. It's definitely an extreme "video game" kind of course, but we had a great time. Definitely a course that is more enjoyable if you're playing the first time with someone who's been there before.

Overall, we want to go back with a bit bigger group since it was just two of us.

Went back and found my write up from out trip: https://texags.com/forums/60/topics/3380675/replies/66143199

#10 might be the best course there.

#8 is skippable.

Play the Irish also! I loved them both, but I really enjoyed the course in Kohler called Blackwolf Run. The creeks and hills that run through the hills! If the wives play go walk the par 3 course at Blackwolf Run.
Who knows my son, Wes, may be your caddie up there?

Our schedule just allows for one day of golf there, unfortunately. Your son caddies at both Straits courses? Wives don't play, but sounds like they'll enjoy those 2 downtown areas you mentioned.
