…between D-1 college golf / Korn-Ferry golf and the PGA Tour…

My nephew was SEC player of the year and a regular champ / Top 10 guy on Korn-Ferry…

Been on PGA Tour for a few years… Has some Top 10 finishes (Travelers twice) and some others, but hasn't been able to break through for consistent success as before…

He's one of the longest players on Tour and has "all the shots"…

He came by for dinner Sunday prior to The Nelson…

I asked him the difference between College / Korn-Ferry and the PGA..

His response…

"In college and KF, everybody was chummy and rooted for each other…

At the PGA level, everybody wants to rip your heart out and then laugh at you…"

Total Cut-throat…

The overuse of the ellipsis means that you're an old geezer.

"Those guys can ****ing putt" - guy from Bartow Golf Course in Bartow FL (Donald Ross course; ultimate muni) said when he got back after failing off the KF Tour (or whatever it was called then).

Your nephew is playing well at the Byron.

I have been told by a marginal pro (did it for 10 years on various tours) that it is also very political.

He explained all of the powers around major golf to where it sounded like more than results mattered.

From TV - they putt better than me!

Knew a guy that played in college and was on the PGA tour for 8-10 years. Led the US Open after day 1 or 2 once. He said he loved college golf and the team atmosphere. He said being on tour was the loneliest thing ever.

When I first discovered golf, I took a trip to Mobile, Alabama and played a course there.

While I was there I was told about a kid named Bobby Wyatt, who had recently shot a 57 in a tournament round. I thought for sure a kid like that would have a future as a world beater on tour. But it didn't happen.

For every Rory and Jordan Spieth phenom, there are plenty of Ty Tryons or other 'can't miss kids' that just can't win at the highest level.

Yea. It's easy to talk about Spieth as a "choker" but to do what he's done?! Or really any of them. It's just a whole other world. Not even close to what we know as golf.

Speith's run for those 3ish years was incredible. But even for the best players in the world, thats often all the window they'll get. Look at Homa. He was #7 in the world 15 months ago. It took JT 3 years to pick off any tourney win.

The long runs of sustained success are so few and far between. Makes thinking about Rory's career even more impressive. He hasn't been outside the top 15 in OWGR since 2009.

Goes to show just how hard it is even for generational talents like that

I agree. I think runs like Tiger and to a lesser extent now Rory or Scottie have spoiled golf fans with expectations.

Its like they expect them to win or be in contention to win almost all of the time because they are so good. But the game is fickle and fragile for even those at the highest level. So to have success for such a sustained period is an outlier.

Nah...Thompson is not in the field at the Byron.
