My son is looking for a used driver that came out in the couple of years. What drivers do yall recommend? And which ones are duds that he should not consider?

Ping G430 or G425. Both great drivers. Both now $399 if he decides he prefers new, down from $599. The G430 will be easier to find in stock. He could demo the different shaft combinations; ping has some great ones they don't upcharge for (like the Tour 65). Carl's Golfland is a good place to order from where it's easy to pick different shaft options. They ship for free and quickly

Stealth is pretty solid too for a hundred bucks or so

Thanks for the recommendations. I told him those Pings were solid. I like my Rogue ST, but I didn't know anything about the Mavrik.

We didn't see any Stealths in the store.

Look at the GolfWRX classifieds section; lots of great deals on barely used drivers and upgraded shafts. Take a look

Been playing the G430 Max10K since November and absolutely love that stick. Long and straight. Went with the 12 degree loft and CB55 regular shaft. Absolute nails.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I have a very high swing speed, but depending on the bend profile of the shaft sometimes the regular flex just works better with my swing so don't dismiss a certain shaft because of flex. Get fitted and you may be surprised on what works the best for your swing. I now use a 40g shaft which is considerably softer in flex just because it kicks at just the right time for my swing. You never know until you try it out.

Thanks for the replies.

We went to the PGA Superstore on Saturday and tried some drivers. We found a shaft that worked well for him and actually ended up buying just the shaft and put it on his old driver for now (his buddy had broken the old shaft on that driver last week). It was a great experience, an older man named Bill went out of his way to help us out. In fact it was his idea to find that shaft and put it on his old driver. He could have easily put us in one of the used drivers he was trying out and had us spend $300-500, instead of $100 for just the shaft.

He's going to stick with this setup a little longer and see how it does. He might be looking in the near future and now we know which shaft works well for his swing. The previous shaft on that driver was fitted to my swing which is a lot different than the way he swings.

This, plus there is no universal standard for what "stiff" and "regular" mean between shaft manufacturers. I played a stiff Fujikura Fuel shaft in a 5w for years, but it was much closer to a regular in terms of weight and profile. The combination worked great for that specific club and shaft, but it certainly didn't mean I needed to play a stiff shaft in anything else.

Good deal. Yeah, with the limits in size and COR and manufacturers being 25+ years into developing heads under those limits, getting the right shaft is where the key is now. If you find a head that works for you and you like how it sets up, may as well stay with it.

Swing speed is the quick and dirty way to guess at which shaft flex you need. Transition, swing type, preferred ball flight, all of these things are part of a real fitting.

very high swing speed and 40g shaft? yikes that doesn't sound like a good mix. Have you measured your spin rate with this setup?

TPT Nitro shafts are some of the most stable and low torque values for the lighter weight shafts, but you will have to pay $$ for them. Been on a launch monitor quite a bit with this shaft testing it out, it ranges from 1800 to 2100. It's a bomber for sure!
