Staying at the JW Marriott in a few weeks and looking to play at least on day w/ my son (12). I'm not necessarily opposed to playing either of the courses on property, though not too thrilled at the prospect of paying $$$ (played the oaks course a long time ago and don't remember being blown away..at least in summer). Any recs for other options around there? Just looking at the map, Canyon Springs looks interesting and close by.

I thoroughly enjoyed Canyon Springs when I last went to SA. Think you and your son would have a great time.

Snack shack has some great tacos too

Canyon Springs is nice, but it has more tournaments than any course I know of. So depending on the days you'll be in town, you may or may not get to play it.

Check out Riverside, they just renovated it last year and it was in good shape when we played it back in the fall.

Canyon Springs is nice and relatively close. Silverhorn would be another decent option a few miles down 281. Riverside is nice and redone, but on the opposite side of town. The Quarry isn't too far, but zero shade.

You're right I forgot how far Riverside is from there.

We played a tournament at Silverhorn in February, it was a fun track and in good shape.

Don't go to Riverside right now, there was a mistake made with the additives and all of the greens pretty much died in late March, superintendent fired and they've been putting a lot of work into recovering it.

On the north side of town: Cedar Creek (maybe one of the best city courses in the south, just held a US Open qualifier), Canyon Springs (may get stuck behind a 78 man scramble event), Silverhorn (tight but fun course, pretty decent conditions right now), Olympia Hills (a bit easier, good conditions and recently regrassed), Northern Hills (city course, fair to ok conditions), La Cantera (resort with some elevated prices but conditions always pristine, actually a decent player course for being a resort course). TPC was in a bit of a transition when I played last week, the overseed is starting to burn off with the early heat wave and the Bermuda wasn't quite in its good summer conditions.

Down 281 just north of downtown is Breckenridge Park. Pretty short course, which would be good for son, and probably the most historical course in Texas.

Also could go north up 281 and play Valeer Creek. It is a few miles south of Blanco, TX.

Is River Crossing just north still open for public play?

See what it costs to play TPC at 5PM. I've done it quite a few times and thought it was reasonable for the quality and the added bonus of having the course to yourself.

Canyons at TPC is superior to the Oaks IMHO, I'd play that. Also the Quarry and La Cantera aren't bad

Silverhorn is a good option if you a enjoy 5+hr round. If not, avoid like the plague

Valeer creek is an awesome track and not too far up the road from you.

Any companies out there set up tee times for you? Looking to book our own hotel on riverwalk, bring wives along, but play golf 3-4 days while there.

Canyon Springs was a good course when I played it a few years ago. The Quarry and La Cantera are other great choices. The views and elevated shots at La Cantera would be awesome for a 12 year old to experience, but it's tough!

If you play the Quarry, finish the back 9 before noon unless you want to be sitting in a giant oven.

Just played Quarry and I can confirm it was a brutal back nine!
