I've always installed my own grips with solvent and tape. Never been an issue except removal of old tape.

Do any one you use air? Do you feel like the grip is sturdy enough without grip tape? I feel like it would move around but admittedly I've never tried a grip that has been blow on.

I use a heat gun on a low setting to get grip tape off. Never had any issues with that method.

I dont think a grip would be stable at all without solvent and tape.

Unless it's logistics, I don't understand doing grips yourself. I can do my own, but my local golf shop does it for the cost of the grip, generally while I am waiting. Not too often do they ask me to leave them for an hour or two. If my local shop wasn't convenient to me I would re-consider. But otherwise I do wonder "why"?

I like doing it to have a small connection to my clubs and their upkeep. It also gives me an excuse to have a couple cocktails and watch golf for a few hours in the garage without the wife questioning how I'm using my time.

Judging by your username, your garage is probably a heck of a lot cooler than mine.

LOL. It's quite cool. Actually put in a heater a few years ago!

And that's a good enough reason for me.

I don't have a good shop around that will do it for a good price

Besides what I think is straight is different than any shop I've known

If we are talking steel shafts, I use my utility knife and lay it over at a shallow angle and cut the entire length of the tape in 3 places about equally spaced around the shaft. Then when you peel it, you can get a pretty good strip up in once shot without having to pick away at tape too much. It's not perfect, but pretty fast...then I clean up residue with same solvent to install on a paper towel.

Hook blade on a box cutter. Run it all the way through the grip and it peels right off. If you need help you can torch it for a little bit and it will make it easier

Yes, I use Star Grips. Made in USA and when you buy a set they send you the air gun so you can do it yourself. I've never had a grip slip or twist.

I grip my own clubs. Been burned too me times in the past by letting the big box stores do a crap job.

I do my own grips because it's easy to do, satisfies the itch to tinker with my clubs, and doesn't require a lot of equipment or work space. I'll pay a local shop if the job involves reshafting or requires a loft/lie machine.

I bought one of these for removing old grip tape. Well worth the money.

Never tried using air to regrip.

Used air for my last set of grips. It was easy. No problems with stability of the grip afterward. Don't know how things will go when it comes time to take them off (that's the only bonus of the whole process - not having to take off the old tape)

Bought a Ryobi air compressor and used it on my last grip change. Worked like a charm. No movement on the grips at all. The first one or two were tricky in terms of getting the alignment right, but after that it was a piece of cake. Just have to make sure you have the right size adapter needle to stick in the end of the grip.

Btw, even with a compressor, you still need the tape. I dip the open edge of the grip in just a sliver of solvent to get it started.

I started blowing my grips on a couple years back as I prefer a softer wrap grip and they tend to decay pretty quickly in the Texas heat/humidity and I just prefer to have that convenience instead of taking them to a shop.

I use simple masking tape under the grips and I've never had an issue.
The air gun attachment is a game changer. You'll also make your life alot easier by picking up a set of hook blades for a utility knife. The tape removal is also much easier using the tape scraper tool thats fairly cheap as well.

I purchased my air gun attachment from Pure grips but it's the same setup as the one sold by Star grips.
