Damn... but I knew something was up. Over the past 2-3 years, the course conditions were on a steady downhill slide. When the water pump caught on fire, that was the last dagger. The fairways never recovered. Cypress Lakes was once known to have the best grass in town. We've played there hundreds of times. The last time was back in February. It felt worn and in need of attention. RIP my old friend. We enjoyed you while we could.

But.... 'being sold'... does that mean someone's coming in to refurbish the old place and bring it back to its previous glory, or does that mean someone's coming in to bulldoze the property and build houses?

Sold to a developer so likely houses. Been rumored for a long time to be shutting down.

At one point it had some of the best greens in the area. Unfortunately the rumor is that it has been sold for development. The land is just worth too much with houses on it. Going to suck driving by and seeing houses there.

That stinks. Public golf options in Houston just keep dwindling. It was one of the last decent places you could play that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I knew this was rumored and it got more and more obvious that it was on the way out. The pro shop was starting to look like abandoned building…

RIP good buddy.

Sux because I live 1 mile away. Wonder about the homes built and being built right next to the course. They were sold with the idea of being on a course. But now have to use Jersey meadows, Houston national or blackhorse.

I hear you, we live in Hyde Park just before Mueske. Gonna be sad to see it go.

We are trying to stop the repurposing of Cypress Lakes Golf Course from a golf course to residential homes and any information you have can help! In particular, if anyone has seen a bald eagle on the property, please send a picture or any information you have to VOCLGOLF@gmail.com

Uphill battle. It's been several years since I have seen an eagle on the course but I did see one once years ago. No pictures though. What about nutras, ducks or squirrels. Any lawsuits coming from the homes next door to stop the development?? I want the course to stay for 15 more years but I'm resigned to losing it in the next month.

Or maybe you can pass the collection plate around and buy the property yourself and keep it as a golf course.

Yes, the surrounding community is in the process of formally pushing back. Despite what many believe, it is not too late. Anyone who is concerned can contact us at VOCLGOLF@gmail.com to follow up on our course of action. In the meantime, if we do find proof of eagles, we can pause development while we pursue other avenues.

The neighboring community did try to group together and buy the property out of foreclosure in 2012, but the bank refused to accept the bid.

Sad, man. I knew it was coming for the last few years, the owner just stopped investing in it and put a bunch of money into their other property, Longwood. When they wouldn't even spend a few hundred bucks several years ago to paint over the "Matt Swanson's School of Golf" sign properly, I knew it wouldn't last long. I thought it was hilarious when they built that starter's shed by the range; the thing's never been used.

I think the owner has been looking for a buyer for years.

One of the few public courses around Northwest Houston that's walkable, too.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. This is America. You own the land you should get to decide was becomes of it. I live very close to cyp lakes too.

My understanding is that two attorneys live right next door and tried to stop it, not sure if that is true. Cypress Lakes is always busy, they were not losing money that is for sure. The owner is Triumph Golf. I heard the deed restrictions in the Longwood neighborhood require a golf course to be present in the neighborhood that is why Longwood survived but rumor is they are struggling. I also heard that another golf management company wanted to buy Cypress Lakes but Triumph sold to a developer. I wish the city of Cypress would buy it and maybe they wouldn't make a ton but they wouldn't lose any either and they could promote it as a green space and one of the best muni's in the area. Maybe put a nice restaurant as part of the clubhouse.

This will not help you but about 6-7 months ago I was out walking the dog and I saw a bald eagle cruising between the two ponds on either side of Cypresswood Drive just down from the course, shocked the heck out of me so I had to look twice, it was a bald eagle and a cool sight!!!

I lived in Longwood years ago (1995-2005). It was once a country club quality course, but after being sold a couple times and separated from the original developer, things started to make a turn for the worse.

I played it six months ago out of nostalgia. Due to development in the area, the flood control district has taken control of what used to be Palmetto 2-3-4 and Post Oak 5-6-7-8 and the course has been butchered to somehow assemble an 18 hole course. Of what they have left, there are maybe 7-8 holes that remain the way they were originally designed. Some people may like it now, but I can't get past what it used to be.

Longwood is $115 on golfnow tomorrow… $115.

I'm curious about the re-do, but not that curious.

There aren't any public courses in Houston that is worth that much to play.

Your best bet to see eagles on the course is in between the back of the driving range and 8 green. I've seen as many as 4 bald eagles back there but it's been awhile. Typically from now until early fall is a good time to see them there.

When I started reading this post, I thought you were referring to seeing eagles on the 8th hole as that is a par 5. But I have seen an actual eagle. Have to check my phone to see if I took a picture.

Whoever made the decision to use white range balls is an idiot. The range is between the 9th and 10th holes so if you miss your drive to the right on either hole, good luck finding your ball unless you play with a yellow ball.

That is why I bring bright red balls to play on 9 and 10. The fairway on 10 can be tough to find your ball even in the middle of the fairway if you use white balls.

They did a great job with the makeover. It's cheaper than blackhorse and was in great shape the last time I played it a few months back.

I'm gonna have to go try it, I lived there when it first opened and only had the original 18. To me, it was the best layout around.

But this is why ****ing cinco is $110 now on the weekend. West side of Houston has become a black hole of public golf.

It's pretty busy depending on the weather. What you will find is that there are weeds in the fairways and the rough areas are really long. Greens were not bad.

It's brutal! I drive 45 min-1 hr every time I play now (live in Cypress). The pricing for public golf in Houston is insane (but so are private clubs).

I remember back when my rotation was Cypress Lakes, River Ridge (Brookshire), and Cypresswood Traditions. All three had great grass...River Ridge stood out as having great turf even in the winter and early spring months imo. RIP to CL and RR.

He's always been up and down, but he's getting older and the young guns are hungry.
