Can we talk about golf balls again?

It seems like all the qualifiers have to do with swing speed. If you swing X, use Y. But invariably, those same balls also seem to feature more spin. It's like the assumption is that rank amateurs - like yours truly - have a slower swing speed and ball speed compared to good+ golfers. The problem is that good+ golfers with faster swing speeds are already better at hitting the center face and want more shot shaping ability, so they don't need help minimizing sping.

For those of you swinging 105+ but needing help to keep the ball in play off the tee, what kind of ball are you playing?

I really like the Titleist AVX. Price point is decent and I get the same performance out of it as I do the Pro V1.

My driver speed is 103-105. I really like the Taylormade TP5 and TP5x. Their website says the x has lower spin rate on driver. I've played with both and I'm not sure I can tell the difference. But I've never played them side by side.

Edit to add: What's your handicap OP? I just re-read your post and it looks like you have a high swing speed but maybe also a high handicap. If that's the case, the AVX mentioned above might be a better fit.

I really want to try that, I have a really high swing speed and I was kinda shocked anything was longer than the left dash that you could actually spin around the greens

The new Titleist Toursoft specs are so close to ProV1 that for $20 less a dozen, I might have to try these for a few rounds.

When I play the TP5 I get insane spin numbers, but do fairly well with the TP5x. The only problem is my chipping has suffered as a result.

Of course I keep losing too many so I now play the Tour Response, which also plays better for me around the greens anyways.

I love the Srixon Q-Star Tour, TaylorMade TP5, and I just ordered the TP5X to try.

All in all, I should probably be playing a mid-range ball but want as much consistency as I can get and the TP5/TP5X provide that because I can use them on my sim (Pix versions) as well. Only difference is I buy new for the course and mint used ones for the sim.

I farted around with Precept then wen to Srixon and ended up at Titleist. The last two rounds I've played I made it around with one ball. Now, is that due to the ball or because I'm playing better? Don't know the answer but I really like the Pro V-1s I've been playing for the past 6 months. Long enough off the tee and plenty of feel with the short game. I'm done looking for a golf ball I like.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

My swing speed is around 100 and I have been using the AVX for a few years now but I am looking to potentially switch to the left dash after the MyGolfSpy results.

The spin rate difference between the TP5 and TP5x is probably like 400 rpms or less

So thats like 6 revolutions a second less than TP5...almost not noticeable chipping if the ball is the air for a full second.

Interesting read. I play a variety of balls because I mostly play what I find, but have enough feral balls that I'll play a dozen of them at a time. I gravitate towards the 70 compression balls with my 86-92 mph D swing speed as they seem to be a decent compromise of distance and spin for me.

However, when I'm playing for league, the V1's and V1x's come out as my personal best rounds are with those two balls. The caveat has been that the V1x, in particular, is a feast or famine proposition. If my swing is off a bit much, then they fly into the woods at an alarming rate. But when I'm on, as I hit the green in particular, the results are far more impressive than any other balls.

I'm a feel and results kinda guy. I've never really looked at spin rates on my clubs and balls. But I do have a Garmin, so maybe I'll do a test with each of them and see how those numbers compare.

I don't think I've tried the Tour Response yet.

Not sure how it happened, but when trying to decide between starting a subscription or just ordering TP5 balls through the TaylorMade app a few weeks ago, my order showed 2 dozen but I was only charged for 1 dozen. Sure enough, 2 dozen arrived at my house.

I was only charged for one dozen and when I look at my orders it shows 2 dozen but for the price of 1 dozen.

Nothing like a free box of $50 golf balls.

I play the Maxfli's tour balls. For the price and quality they cant be beat imo. They are also usually on sale where you can get 2 boxes for around $50.

They are every bit as good as a prov

Maxfli has been getting good reviews and they actually have a couple of people- Ben Griffin and Lexi Thompson- playing it on tours. Been wanting to try that one myself.

Personally the ProV and Chrome Tour work best for me. I'm very low spin with my driver but don't like the firmer, higher spinning X models.

Oh, I can spray balls with the best of them, but I have noticed I'm really good or bad with the Pro V1's and the lower compression balls are more forgiving off the tee, but have no stopping power on the greens for me.

I'm in a similar boat and have tried the left dash after playing AVX for a couple years and it was way too firm feeling. You're going from one of the softest balls out there to one of the firmest.

I wound up just moving to a Pro-V1 and am sticking with it.

But since i'm a mental nutcase, I am going to try the Callaway triple diamond after seeing the MGS results.

MGS used to have a great web experience a few years ago. But then the number of video ads went through the roof. I avoid using MGS on my phone now.

About 7 (?) years ago I switched from PV1x to Snell and never looked back. And I can buy a new club every two years with the savings. I'm not sure why they didn't test it.

The idea that a golf ball will help your game is not a great place to start.

If you have 105+ swing speed and you can't hit fairways, stop browsing golf balls and go get your over-the-top baseball swing fixed with lessons.

They tested it a year or so ago and it was rated the worst ball they ever did test. Snell switched factories after covid and quality went in the tank according to their tests. They were a fan of the previous generation but hated the new one.

They're $30/dozen with their buy 5 dozen get 1 dozen fee special and from time to time they have free customization (which is an added bonus).

I played up in Denver in a scramble this past week as part of a guys trip, and I took a bunch of random balls from leftovers I've purchased and found over the years. I think that of all the balls I played, the one that gave me the best results was the Callaway Chrome Soft. Just felt more stable for me, especially off the tee. Gonna play that one a while and see if it was a fluke good round, or if there's something there for me.
