I have created a new thread for the following press release, because the team deserves it, instead of adding it to the tournament page I created when the tournament started and updated each day.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. The No. 7 Texas A&M women's golf team dominated the Carmel Cup with a 26-stoke victory Sunday after [Junior] Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio earned the individual title after firing a 4-under 68 on the final day at the historic Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Note that Sophomore Vanessa Borovilos finished tied for second so we grabbed first AND second place !!

You can see the individual scorecards by clicking on Texas A&M here:

You can see R1, R2 and R3 individual scorecards by clicking on player names here:

Participating teams with national rankings:

Texas A&M (7)
Arkansas (10)
Vanderbilt (11)
Oklahoma State (20)
Mississippi State (21)
TCU (24)
Oklahoma
Texas Tech

This was a great win over five Top 25 teams. All big schools. Not the same as playing all the Top 10 teams but a 26 stroke win over the teams in the tournament IS a huge accomplishment.

Note that teams who win team titles and championships regularly usually have several very talented and successful players and excellent recruiting classes year after year. Obviously, this also gives them a great chance to win the individual titles and championships, too. Our Freshman class, ranked #2 in the country, added a lot of talent to our team. I was really excited when we signed this Freshman class AND when we added a very talented and accomplished transfer (Louise Reau) so have been looking forward to this tournament since signing day - and it was certainly worth the wait !!!

A HUGE congratulations to the players, Coach Chadwell and the staff for this weekend's wins !!!

Note: The Aggies next play in the Folds of Honor Collegiate in Grand Haven, MI, starting on Monday, September 8.

I should have added the overall scores to my post above, for those not wanting to click on links. Adding now. R1, R2 and R3 scores in parenthesis.

1st at -8 (JR) Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio (-3, -1, -4)
T2 at -7 (SO) Vanessa Borovilos (-2, -3, -2)
T14 at +3 (FR) Natalie Yen (+1, -1, +3)
T14 at +3 (FR) Brynn Kort (-3, +7, -1)
T16 at +4 (JR) Sky Sudberry (E, +1, +3)
T23 at +6 (FR) Scarlett Schremmer (+4, +2, E)

Three returning players and three Freshmen.

Note that I am NOT a coach, never have been and a complete amateur but I am a huge fan of our team so just my thoughts as such !!

Adding to what I wrote about about top-ranked teams having several really good players on their teams:

Our 'worst' overall finish was a +6, good enough for T23 (Freshman Scarlett is very talented, she got better each day and has a great future in Maroon and White!). Last place overall for all players was 48. Which means that ALL of our players finished better than about half of the field.

Avery Weed, MS State, had a great tournament and tied with Vanessa for 2nd with a -7 overall. But the next best score on her team was a +7. Overall the team finished at +28, 41 strokes behind the Aggies, tied for 6th place.

Arkansas had two players play really well and finish high, in 4th and 5th place with overall scores of -6 and -3. The next best finish on the team was a +8 and as a team Arkansas finished in 4th place with an overall team score of +19, 32 strokes behind the Aggies.

Now, finishing a tournament in 4th place is certainly a great showing but if a team has a couple of players with really good scores, several strokes below par, two around par or not too much over, and the remaining players are not too far behind them the team has a chance to finish in first or second in a lot of tournaments. Our new talent has enabled us to do just this.

And each tournament we play our new players will get more experience, skill and knowledge about the game. I am really looking forward to watching them do this !!

Disclaimer: As they say in the financial world, past results do not guarantee future performance. And this is just one tournament. But I think they will do very well indeed in the future !!
