So my 13 year old decided this time last year to stop playing baseball and get serious about golf. Last year we bout him a used youth set, I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on clubs if this was just a temporary thing he thought he wanted to do.

Well, I can tell you now this isn't just a temporary thing, he's fallen in love with the game. He's played more golf this past year than I've played in probably the last 5 years.

He's got such a great natural swing, and it comes very easy for him. He has now set a goal that he wants to make the high school team.

His current coach told us about 2 weeks ago that he thought his clubs might be too short for him. Last week while they were still out of school his grandfather took him to the PGA superstore and they told him the same thing, he needs some standard length clubs.

So, I've been looking, but there's such a wide range and I don't know what I should be looking for.

Any suggestions? Is one brand better than others for what he needs? We're planning on going back the PGA store soon, but I would like some information before I walk in there blind and get sold a set that he really doesn't need.

Suggestion would be to get fit for some clubs and go into the fitting brand agnostic.

You can use the Ping site for a good gauge, measuring wrist to floor. I have a set of Srixon irons that are a 1/2" short my son used through 15 years old. Let me know if you're interested and I'll make you a good deal. I won't be home to measure or take pics until next weekend.

What's your son's current height / weight?

He was probably 5'9ish when he was using those. He just quit playing or he'd still use those.

Regarding the irons, they are combo set of ZX5 (4-6i) and ZX7 (7-AW).

PGAT Superstore has a TON of very nice used iron sets. Get staff to help you on measurements and demo a few.

Shaft plays a huge role honestly.

Getting him into a 90 or 95 gram depending on his swing speed etc would serve him well.

A used set of p790 irons with the proper shaft would do wonders.

I have three high school boys who play golf. My younger two - 16 year old twins - are serious about it. They were fitted for custom clubs by Ryan Haskell at David Tom's academy in Shreveport. They have been very pleased. One plays with Ping and the other Mizuno.

My 18 year old was fitted at PGA Superstore. He has ended up less happy, but that is a user issue we think (he thinks it is an equipment issue). He does not put in nearly the practice time that the twins do.

What's his driver swing speed?

I have a sim2 9 degree that I can pair him with a tensie orange stiff flex that's standard 3 wood length. It would probably be perfect for a 13 year old before he completely fills out and needs a full driver length shaft

Where are you located? This may help others pinpoint a fitting studio in your area.

PGA SS can be hit or miss on a fitter, but great to try out different brands and combos. Swing speed, tempo, angle of attack lots of factors to account for to recommend a shaft that will work for his swing.

You will save yourself lots of money if you go to a quality club fitter first. Instead of buying set after set until one works.

I have tons of extra shafts and clubs over the years that my son outgrew as he progressed up the competitive chain. Expect to keep getting fit for different shafts as He grows stronger.

My advice would be to take him to a professional fitter who charges for the service. You can walk out with his stats and then start cruising places like Second Swing for used sets that match up to his needs. It's more money on the front end, but less on the back.

Depends on budget and size of the kid. If you're in the metroplex 2nd swing will do a fitting for free with purchase and has a huge selection of used clubs. They'll also do remote fittings to get you close as well. You can shop around for better deals on eBay but the service and return policy at 2ndswing is worth it. If he's still growing I wouldn't drop a ton on new clubs. As he gets taller, stronger and swings faster he'll need new clubs again soon. At 13 years old you'll be buying clubs 1 or 2 more times before he graduates high school.
