Kid does golf classes and his coach said the only thing holding him back are his irons…. low end Callaway edge

Told the coach I wasn't buying good clubs until he was good enough swingwise. Coach said, he's good enough.

Said the irons are too flexible and he doesn't need offset club (had to look that up).

So any ideas on decent clubs for him? He does have a free fitting at PGA store, so I figured he could tryout some used clubs they have.

A bit funny but they were hitting driver today on a two sided range and one side had the tee boxes forward, so the range was 311 yards. Coach saw my kid not hitting with full effort, my son said he was afraid to hit the people on the other end. Coach said, go ahead and hit will full effort you won't hit anyone, so my kid blasts his next shot over 290…and the coach told him to switch to his 3 wood….ha

Yep. Just get him fitted. He's not growing much. Those are adult clubs anyway. You don't need to spend a fortune, but the right clubs will make a huge difference to him.

Fitting will be club specific and the benefit is in length and lie plus shaft match (finding the right stock shaft). They should also look at grip alternatives. Go to PGA Superstore and give them your budget. Hit lots of different brands. I think they wave the fitting charge if you buy. Previous year model is a good way to save costs.

Go get a budget friendly fitting. Hit the used club market looking for a set with the same shafts and flex.

If he needs upright or flat lies, they can be adjusted - and def should be. Playing with wrong lie will either give poor results or create poor habits as he tries to adjust to the clubs rather than them fitting.

If the shafts in the used clubs are too long, they can be cut with a plumbers cutting tool (assuming they are steel shafts) and regripped. You can do that for free at home - plus cost of grips.

I wouldn't mess with clubs where shafts are shorter than his requirements - that requires inserting an extension, etc. Just not worth it.

I'd lean towards something Callaway - because Callaway Preowned has lots of good used iron sets and they will adjust lies for $4 a club. Good deal!
Edit - Second Swing is probably another option for onsite fitting and access to racks of used clubs. IMO they are a little overpriced on used clubs, but fitting is free if you buy from them.

Every golfer that is remotely serious about the game and trying to improve should have clubs that fit.

Kid was lacing a 3w 265, unfortunately $299 used….woof

Take him to the PGA tour superstore, let him demo some clubs, see if you can find a shaft and head category that fit. If he's hitting a driver 290, 3W 265 he's going to be in a 120g or 130g Stiff or X-flex. He could probably play either depending on preference and transition.

Once he gets an idea of what works for him look at the classifieds section on the GolfWRX site, there are lots of good used sets that are posted there.

But isn't it more than just the shaft? The kid was fit for clubhead and shaft combinations. If they go out and buy a different set just because it has the right shaft...it won't be the same. Assuming he got a decent fitting that was evaluating launch and spin rates - going to a different clubhead could be way different results.

I do think they could get away with same clubheads, same shafts and standard length. 1/2" of difference isn't enough to matter. If it was 1-1/2", then I'd agree longer shafts are warranted. That's just my opinion though - basically coming from the position choking down 1/2" makes almost zero difference.

I noticed the half inch the fitter set for me.

I have a 4-PW set of Titleist AP2 716s with KBS X Stiff shafts and mid size grips +1 length in SA that I would part with.

If he really loves the game and you see him playing a ton and continuing to improve, I say get him a full fitting for new clubs. Those will last him a long time and will be well worth it in the end.

If you happen to be in the DFW area, I would recommend going up to 2nd swing. They will fit you for used clubs, and the fitting is included in the club price if you buy. I'm a scratch golfer, and honestly there is very little different in new vs used irons. You will save a decent amount of money this way.

You can also get his swing speed and look online for shafts and clubs matching his ability and buy used to save even a little more, but honestly, the peace of mind of getting fit is well worth it imo

I was just in SA yesterday...damn.

He tried out all kinds of clubs at the pga store, used and new.

all were hit pretty much the same but he liked the Tour Edge the best....which are half the cost of the big names....nice.

With a 15% off coupon I ordered new irons customized to his fitting stats, ended up much cheaper than used big brands.
