Want to convert our kids' Jack and Jill bathroom tub/shower to a walk in shower…pull out the tub. They only use our shower so I want my own space back, plus we have 2 more tubs if needed and let's be honest, shower curtains are awful.

If anyone has done this- what did it cost you? We have extra tile from our master remodel. Want to get an idea before I reach out to our usual guy.

Is it currently a fiberglass slide-in tub/shower combo piece? Or is it a slide-in tub with tile surround? Either way, it is easy enough to demo all of that out yourself and then have a tile guy come in and do the shower pan, backer board, red guard, and lay the tile. Necessary plumbing work can be DIY or have it done by a plumber. If you can get out of it with only forking over $5k that would be a win!

Thanks! I figured we could demo ourselves to save some on that end. It's a slide-in tub with tile surrounding.

I did it a few years back in a previous home. Did everything but the tile and glass myself. Those were my biggest expenses.

I found water damage while prepping to repaint and just started going to town and took it down to the studs and started over.

We did it during an entire home demo/remodel. Obviously I don't know the cost of that one part, but it looks way better.

If you are up for it, you can avoid the tile shower pan by using a shower base. Kohler makes some cast iron that would fit be a fit for the area. You then just need to plumb the valve and tile the walls. Just a thought.

Not much to add here however I did this on my old townhome. Had one of those sauna style grand tubs the width of the bathroom. Took all of it out and everything to stud myself. Hired out the wall to wall glass install and the solid surface work.

Protip. If you want to do this yourself, you can do your bench with 24"x24"x4" concrete blocks and save a considerable amount of money and time.

You can do your own shower floor slope, basic plumbing, installing backer board, tiling with leveling spacers to make it much much easier, and my all in cost for this was around $3300. Of which the glass was around $1700.

My first time doing it and I have since remodeled a few more bathrooms and I am in fact doing our guest bath now.
