I've got a fireplace that is gas-started but wood-burning. How much would it cost me to put in permanent gas logs?

However much the gas logs cost. Just put them in, open the flue, turn on the gas, and light'er up.

Depends on the size of the fireplace and what you pick out and if you pay to have someone install. Figure $400-$1200 as long as you have a gas log starter. If gas has to be run then obviously a lot more.

We do the log sets in Houston area. Creekstone Outdoors.

I tried that a couple of years ago but it wasn't very aesthetically pleasing. Did I just buy the wrong logs, or does the pipe need to be modified?

For the best effect, buy a log set with it's own burner setup. You would then remove your log lighter pipe at the side of the fireplace and connect the hose go the new burners.

You can go further and get an automatic lighter that has a remote.

The more you pay, the more realistic you can get. Go to a fireplace store and see them burning.

Did this. Added a 30" (I think) and put in a no-flue set.

I got this at The Fire Box in humble. They have quite a few sets that you can look at and a catalog of even more.

Mine can pump heat into my den pretty well. The fire doesn't touch the logs. Pilot runs all the time unless you turn it off, much like a pilot light on a water heater. All in all I think it was $1600. Did the with myself. Bought an extra bag of lava rock as my opening was big, as well as 4 pinecone rocks for looks. Smaller sets are cheaper.
