Carpet cleaning...DIY or no?

I'd like to have a few rooms cleaned (2 rooms, hallway, stairs). I've debated between:
  • Renting a DIY machine from a home store/Walmart, or
  • Using some company who advertises in a USPS flier with some $100-off discount

Some of the furniture in these rooms is heavy. For that reason, I'm leaning against DIY. If I did DIY, then I might just do the high-traffic areas where we have heavy furniture and not move the furniture (much).

On the other hand, some of the stains are fairly old so I'm doubtful anything will make much difference.

Any first-hand experiences and/or recommendations (esp for north-Austin area)?

We rented one to clean up a pet mess..

Then ended up just buying one. The rental was 1/3 of the cost of a new one, should have just bought to begin with.

We use it all the time now, with kids and pets.
Maybe once a year you can move furniture to do it, but that's not a regular thing to do. Just use it once or twice a year on exposed areas.

I find some great deals on groupon for steam cleanings for my rentals and main home. The rental machine is great for small spots but its not great for large house cleaning. Let a professional with real steam tools handle it in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it with the small rental machine.
