Exhaust fan in the bathroom went out. Got the motor and bracket out, and the motor was in kind of bad shape. It's had a death rattle for awhile and finally wouldn't turn anymore.

Long story short, my only option was to buy an entirely new fan, box and and all, because the motor for mine isn't sold by itself. I guess it's a win because it's $10 cheaper than the replacement motor for other fan models, but it seems like a waste to be throwing away everything but the motor and new bracket.

Welcome to the new world. I agree that it just seems wasteful.

I was able to buy just the fan, motor and bracket recently. Lots of kits did include all the ducting, like you would want for a new build. And, I was also able to find just the motor, but as you saw, the motor was $10 more expensive than the bracket kit.

I recommend keeping the vent cover in case the one you had previously or the new one breaks at some point. Falls of the ceiling somehow (randomly) and breaks after hitting the floor. Have to buy a whole new kit just to get a cover. So keep the cover. I have used inventoried covers on a few occasions, very handy.
