How screwed am I?

I had a leak in my water main a month or so ago and fixed it with a compression fitting. I've left it open because I've been to do a full slip coupling instead. Well, a neighbor's dog got out, and her FIL was chasing it and stepped on the line. Needless to say, it broke and I was forced to go through with the fix.

Unfortunately, the line has gotten cock eyed over time. When i did the couple, i only got the couple about 1/4" over one side of the line. It isn't leaking, but how screwed am I, and how long do I have?

What material is the line? Based on what you're describing, I'm kind of assuming PVC? If so, I wouldn't leave it for long since it can expand/contract in the sun.

Time for back to back couplings?

Yeah pvc. It's covered with a board now. Everything is glued up and done, I just didn't get much of the full slip onto one section of pipe. I think I should just bury it and call it day, but I also don't want to bury it if I need to redo it.

it will eventually break again. If it was mine I would cut it out and redo it.

Upgrade the line to pex? Can connect to the pvc just past the meter to make it easy and bury the new line and connect it to the house. Rent a trencher for a few hours from HD to make it simple.

Dig up about 3 feet of line. Cut the connections, replace about 2.5 feet of the pvc with pex. Let it sit for a bit (like an hour or two) to make sure its not leaking. Gently pack the dirt underneath the line so it doesn't sag much. Cover the whole thing back up with dirt.

Tell your wife you called the plumber and they wanted $600 to fix a broken water main.

Go buy yourself something nice with the $500 in savings.

This line goes right next to a big tree. I've thought about replacing the line, but that means even more headaches. I've also considered replacing this small section with PEX. I assume the PTC fittings can be buried if wrapped in silicone tape?

Just use one of these next time:

I've installed dozens of these without issue, some over 30 years ago.

If available, use the expanding pex, i forget which type that is. Since this is main water intake, expanding pex wont reduce the flow at its fittings. HD rents the pex expansion tool as well i believe.

It's PEX A. If I do PEX, I may go with PEX B and a 1" line. 3/4" comes out of the meter and transitions to 1" to the house, so 1" PEX fittings aren't going to be restrictive.

I was going to run PEX from meter to house on a new build. Plumbing supply recommended against using any kind of PEX for this purpose. I don't remember why & I bet it's one of those things where you will get differing opinions. I shrugged & went with PVC.

Regarding your situation. Dig a bigger hole if needed so you can replace that repair with a better repair using the material of your choice.

Probably the fittings. You need stainless steel crimps for burial is my understanding. Alternatively, the push to connect can be used if you wrap in silicone tape. My understanding is that burying PEX is somewhat preferred because you have fewer joints and it is more flexible. You just need to install and bury it quickly to avoid UV exposure.
