My upstairs unit is stuck on and isn't responding to my thermostat. It has an ecobee and was set to auto heat/cool. The unit itself is stuck on and is actively cooling, the temp at the thermostat was down to 68 which is below the auto range. When I try to turn the unit off at the thermostat it doesn't respond and the ecobee doesn't register that the unit is running.

I turned the unit off via the switch in the attic for a couple hours thinking maybe it had frozen up but that didn't solve the issue. When I flipped the switch back on it immediately started and is cooling again regardless of thermostat setting.

Any ideas? The thermostat isn't newly installed, it had been running fine for at least 6 months on the same settings.

Had exact same thing happen to mine last year. The thermostat was actually less than a year old (digital, WiFi etc). I just bought on of the old school dial thermostats to just see if that was the issue…and it was. Worked fine ever since so I have bothered replacing with another digital thermostat

Thanks I may try that. It won't respond when I set it to off at the thermostat but when I moved it to heat only it did cycle off and I think I heard the furnace kick on. It doesnt seem to be blowing very warm though

Try pulling the Ecobee faceplate off and verify the wires aren't touching / in the correct pin location?

Nothing noticeably wrong with it. The unit does turn off when I pull the plate so I'm hoping that means it's a thermostat issue. I'll have to try another one tomorrow.

I do have an identical ecobee for my downstairs unit. I wonder if I could just swap the faceplates to test that...

Swapped the faceplate and it works fine so the ecobee was broken. I guess I'll go buy another tomorrow. Thanks everyone

I suspect the contactor on your compressor might be stuck in the closed position.
