Get home from work, set down lunch box and back pack and hear a bang, whoosh and rattling sound in the walls.

OH CRAP...quickly run to turn off the water in the basement and figure out WTF just happened.

Fortunately, it only took about 3-minutes.

When we remodeled our front room we had the wet bar removed. The contractor took all the plumbing out and capped the drains and hot/cold water lines in the basement. But for the vent line he just capped it at the bottom with a pipe clamp and rubber cover inside the wall on the 1st floor (line still went up inside wall). The basement ceiling is not covered so I could see a rubber cap in the hole where the old sink drain pipe used to go through the floor and figured out what happened.

I guess the vent line filled up with water and decided to blow out right as I walked in the door. Fortunate timing as I might have not noticed for several days. I had to cut the drywall in the stairwell (got lucky and hit just the right spot so small 6" x 6" hole and found the end of the bottom of the vent line. I put the rubber cap back on for now (it lasted 4-years).

Does rain water typically fill up a vent line? I guess under normal circumstances it would just drain out the sink drain but that's gone now. It was not sewage (no smell and pretty clean water). There are no other sinks/bathrooms up above that vent line so I don't think it's some other drain (I mean it if was it would have caused much bigger problems a lot sooner).

I plan to trace it out this weekend and hopefully cut it off in the attic glue a proper cap on so I cannot fill up and leak again.

If it goes through the roof/outside cap it off out there also to keep if from happening again into the attic.
