I have my first septic tank. Can I turn off the water to the house when I go out of town or do I need to leave it on for the septic system?

Do you know how water gets into your septic system?

From the house. The water in the system is what is drained or flushed.

Your septic systems doesn't need hot water............Yes you can turn it off if you feel the need.

Are you under the impression that your incoming water will be shut off if you "turn off" your water heater?

If you're out of town there isn't going to be any "new" water introduced into the septic system anyway.

Why do people turn off the water heater when the go out of town? To save on the heating costs? Are these things pone to exploding?

Don't know why people would turn off the water heater. I wasn't planning too, didn't even mention hot water or the water heater.

There is going to be multiple days of hard freeze while I'm out of town, so I was wanting to turn off the water to the entire house.

Yes, you can turn off the water to the house. The septic would not be getting any new waste or water while you were gone anyway.

Also if you turn off the water, turn off the water heater unless you have a tankless one.

Why? The water is just going to sit in the tank and cool off until it triggers the thermostat to heat it up to the setpoint.

Unplug anything that feeds on water, e.g. water heater - or shut off its gas

The most prudent also unplugs anything electrical suspect, e.g. DIY lighting, wiring, new appliances, etc.

While at the meter shutoff, some will also insulate that box from 23F or lower temperatures, e.g. pillow in a plastic bag or similar or over the top of box, weighted down

SEPTIC
If anaerobic, nothing to do
If a pump/aerobic, then one might see if the pump well needs to be insulated/protected & power shut off
Gotta draw since me got no grammar MasterArch '76
