Everything has been fine all spring but this past week when we were on vacation, the squirrels went nuts in our backyard on my Maple tree. I plan on wrapping the trunks in burlap with a compost tee solution and then surrounding the whole trunk inside a 6" drainage pipe. Already gave the tree its fertilizer feeding earlier this year. Any other suggestions besides posting up in the backyard with my Red Rider?

I was thinking about one of these. My buddy had a bad problem with squirrels and got one of these, put a scope on it, and it's friggin awesome. I can hit a 3"x3" target at about 50 yards with it.

Just be warned that if you buy this one online it will definitely kill squirrels, but is WAY bigger than it looks online. Your neighbors will definitely notice when you walk out with this thing.

It depends how deep the damage is then. The tree may be able to callous up. I'd try to save it but expect it to die

Bark just protects a tree. The life juices flow up just below the layer that's exposed. So as long as that isn't cut deep in a ring all the way around, it should be ok as is.
