We have a rather old oak in our backyard with pic below. The wife thinks we need a tree person out to remove this mistletoe but it seems unnecessary to me.

Any subject matter experts care to weigh in?

Get it removed. Mistletoe unlike moss, is an actual parasite that weakens the tree.

Get a certified arborist out.
Mistletoe is a parasite that weakens trees, but generally comes when a tree is already being weakened by something else.

If that's a recent picture and a live oak, then I think the tree may already be dead. You should still have green leaves.
