We have a big screened (in theory) porch on the backside of our house. 2 appx 40' runs, with 3 screen doors. When it was new, it was awesome (with one exception), but it is falling apart.

Issues:
-Screen doors have broken multiple times. We are on our 3rd set of doors. We've done custom and prefab.
-Very challenging to find someone to fix a single screen, and the "fixed" screens fail quickly.

OPTIONS FOR FIXING:
-Glass it in, with better doors. Cons: cost and will likely require some sort of cooling in the summer
-Take it all down and be natural. Cons: dirt/pollen and bugs (wife is a mosquito magnet)
-Replace with new screens. Cons: finding a quality vendor and durability

Judge me not for the current state of messiness.

As neat as it sounds to glad it in, you'll need AC. I would not open it up, though.

Screen repairs is my vote.

What a great porch! My vote is to keep it screened in as well.

I vote also maintaining the screened in functionality.

When we built our house we included a dedicated sunroom and installed some of the vinyl porch windows that are out there. Panels slide vertically so we can close it up or open it all up with the screens. Wouldn't be as expensive as glass windows but could still be pricey.

What about filling the bottom panels in and match the existing siding/wood finish on the inside and just keep the screens on top? The one picture seems to show most of the damage in the bottom panels. This would also help prevent future damage from the inside.

More importantly, how'd you get your HOA to allow chickens?!?
I heard of a family in a neighborhood next to mine that got "therapy chickens" or maybe emotional support chickens. My wife is dying to get some.

why is the door failing? Hinges?

I personally would go the fix route if I could but if you want to spend money and glass it in and AC it then that would give you much more time out there during the year.

Would be interested to know your stain brand/color as well if you can remember!

My vote….. Take down screens and open it up. You can get remote control shades to block sun and heat. Get a mosquito control unit, heavy duty ceiling fans and possibly a misting system.

I would take it all down but screens are very easy to fix and the material is very cheap. If you're going to keep it then watch a couple YouTube videos and do your own repairs.

I'd keep as is. Beef up the door frames. Looks like dogs or kids pushed out the lower screen panels, so I'd cut hardware cloth or fence panel to put inside the screen to prevent that.

What size are the doorways?

If you keep going through them I'd look into a storm door with the roll down window. They are sturdy and you'd need to mount the hinge to the stronger side (in the pic with your grill).

I'd rescreen but like others have pointed out maybe do something different with the lower portions.

Option D - Replace existing wood screen enclosure with an extruded aluminum trim system for the screens and aluminum screen doors.

+1 for keeping it screened and adding solid panels to the doors. Maybe try adding solid panels or lattice to the bottom to protect them from getting hit and damaged by feet or pets. Glass will get really hot on the summer, but open will be miserable with mosquitos when it's nice out. Screening is the best of all worlds.

I would be tempted to put solid panels to match/compliment house around the bottom. ETA: Maybe cedar pickets to match the doors on the kitchen cabinets.

Then I would find a window manufacturer that made a screened storm window with removable sliding panes.

Pro:

Bottom panels would be much less susceptible to damage. Decreases maintenance on screens.
Screens would have a stronger frame to resist damage and easier to replace screen wire.
Windows could be put in during cooler times of the year to extend usable season for the area. With patio heaters, maybe even year round. Windows would keep area warmer and reduce heat loss in winter on those exterior walls. Windows taken out during the warmer times of the year.
In-laws come for Christmas - sorry all we have available is the couches on the patio. (just kidding, kind of)

Con: $$$$$, but makes the space easier to maintain and increases the amount of the year you can use it.

Something like this appeal to you? Roll down screens that are in a track? Little bit tougher than the fine wire screening.
